Make a bed in under 7 minutes and you could be perfect for official bed-making championship
Making the bed and wrestling with your duvet cover is an already stressful process but could you imagine having to do it competitively while racing against another person?
A video that has recently gone viral on social media reveals exactly what that would look like as it gives viewers an eye-opening glance at the world of competitive bed-making. Yes, its a thing.
Video shows off competitive bed-making
The video in question seemingly first appeared on Reddit where it was posted by a user by the name of One_percentile and it has since found its way onto various social media platforms including Instagram.
In the video, we see two men hurriedly preparing separate beds. Not only do they manage to tuck and fold the sheets into the mattress in record time, but they also do it with razor-sharp precision.
And instead of spending about half an hour wrestling to try and get their duvets into the covers, the competitors manage it in a matter of seconds.
To top off the mesmerizing display, the competitor who completes the task first finishes by raising an arm in the air, reminiscent of a gymnast ending their routine with a flourished dismount.
The competitors in the video are seemingly at an event in China but the phenomenon of competitive bed-making is a global one and even features in the IHEA Housekeeping Olympics which is held in the US each year.
Social media reacts
Its safe to say that the viral video has sparked quite a reaction online.
One Instagram user commented: Me: Who would watch that… Also me: *watches whole video in awe*.
While a second added: One day you are young and the next day you enjoy this.
Howwwww did he get that duvet in there so quick?!! =., asked a third.
This commenter wasnt quite so impressed: Pfft, sure, but can he fold a fitted sheet.
Well of course it will be easy with the bed in the middle of the room, joked another. Try doing it against a corner wall, a bedside table and Lego over the floor.
And finally, this commenter asked: Can they compete at my house? = >#

The rules of competitive bed-making
After being genuinely amazed by the bed-making video, we did some digging into the sport, and have found a three-page booklet of rules and regulations and its surprisingly complex.
It should be noted that the rulebook in question is from an event held between hotel staff in Jordan in 2021, so other bed-making competitions around the world may use different rules.
A brief summary of some of the more surprising rules includes
- Competitors should wear their professional uniform during the competition. Wearing slippers or shorts is not allowed.
- The hotels name or logo should not be visible to the judges during the competition. It may be placed on the uniform once the judging is completed.
- Competitors contravening any of the Rules and Regulations of the event may be disqualified.
Beyond that, there are specifications on how the bed should be made, with the rules stating that the bottom sheet must be neatly folded and tucked in from all sides, the duvet properly fills the duvet cover and the pillows correctly fill their cases, among others.

The rules even state that no running is allowed which explains the awkward quick walk we can see the competitors using in the video above.
And finally, a big section of the rulebook discusses the judging criteria which is based on speed, accuracy and skill. This means that simply being as fast as possible wont cut it.
Competitors who complete the task in under seven minutes are awarded 15 points, while those who manage it between seven and 10 minutes are awarded 10 points. Anything longer than that earns no points.
As well as completing the task quickly, competitors must take care with their technique as this can earn a total of 60 points and is divided between how neatly each element of the bed has been made. For example, a neatly made duvet (10 points) and properly filled pillows (10 points) are worth a combined 20 points on their own.
Well, I dont know about you but Im breaking out the stopwatch the next time I have to change the sheets.
