Lori Lightfoot wife: Who is the Chicago mayor's partner Amy Eshleman?

Who is Lori Lightfoot’s wife? The Chicago mayor is in the news after she denied resignation rumours, prompting interest in her personal life and her relationship with her wife, Amy Eshleman.

Who is Lori Lightfoot?

Lightfoot is the first openly lesbian African-American woman to be elected mayor of a major city in the US and has been Chicago’s head since April 2009.

The 58-year-old is from 350 miles east of Chicago, in the small city of Massillon, Ohio.

Her mother, Ann Lightfoot, worked the overnight shift as a nurse’s aide and her father – a budding lawyer – was reduced to being a janitor after he lost his hearing.

Lori is the youngest of three children who grew up in a segregated neighbourhood.

Lightfoot began her love affair with Chicago after being accepted by the University of Chicago to study law in 1986 after graduating from the University of Michigan.

In 1996 she left behind a blossoming law career to become a federal prosecutor.

In the early 2000s she was hired by then-Chicago mayor Richard Daley as deputy chief of the Chicago Department of Procurement Services, the “contracting, certification, and compliance authority for the City of Chicago,” according to the city’s website.

She again worked privately as a lawyer for a while before returning to the public sector in 2015, when Mayor Rahm Emanuel appointed her as president of the Chicago Police Board.

This week Mayor Lori Lightfoot has been battling rumours that she is set to stand down. In a statement, she called the claims “homophobic, racist and misogynistic rumors.”

Who is Lori Lightfoot’s wife?

Lori Lightfoot and her wife, Amy Eshleman, wed on 1 June 2014, the same day same sex marriage was legalised in the state of Illinois.

Eshleman is from a small city in Illinois called Sterling, about 110 miles west of Chicago.

She has lived in the Windy City since the early 90s and worked for the Chicago Public Library for almost 20 years, between 1994 and 2012.

The six foot tall first lady of Chicago earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Miami University in Ohio.

In June 2020, Lori Lightfoot posted on Instagram referencing the fact that their relationship was considered illegal not long ago.

“53 years ago, marriages like ours were illegal. Today, I’m raising an incredible child freely and openly with the love of my life,” Mayor Lightfoot said of their now 13-year-old adopted daughter Vivian.

In June 2018 Lori Lightfoot and her wife walked hand in hand at the 49th annual Pride Parade in Chicago.

Eshleman said it was “one of the most profound and emotional and humbling” moments of her life, adding that showed most Chicagoans are “open and welcoming and diverse and loving and nonjudgmental.”
