Life-changing iPhone hack lets you record Voice Notes without pressing anything
Voice Notes are the new way of messaging, with many choosing to record little audio snippets rather than type a text because it’s quicker and easier – but it still takes some time to find the right button.
First, you have to press the plus icon, then tap ‘Audio’ and by that time, you almost could have written the entire text out. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to record a voice memo without clicking anything? Well, there is.

Record Voice Notes on iPhone without pressing anything
Many don’t realise there’s a secret iMessage feature that lets you send audio messages by simply holding your iPhone up to your ear.
It was only just introduced with Apple’s latest update iOS 18 in September, so you haven’t been missing out for years.
The feature is part of ‘Raise To Listen’, which lets you play and record Voice Notes without touching the screen.
Apple is always striving to make its devices as simple as possible, and you’ll never send Voice Notes the old way again.
It’s not the only change to Messages with iOS 18 either. You can now lock messages on your iPhone and schedule texts for later.
How to record Voice Notes by raising to your ear
- Open the iMessage thread of the person you want to send a Voice Note to
- Lift your phone up to your ear and wait until you hear a beep sound
- Record your voice note then lower the phone when you’re done
- Use the buttons to listen to the Voice Note, send or delete as normal
If it’s not working, try bringing your phone even closer to your ear. The screen will go dark before the beeping noise begins.
‘That’s why my phone keeps doing that’
The hack has gone viral on TikTok and people are finally realizing why they always send voice notes by accident.
One person wrote: “I do this by accident all the time, now it makes sense!”
“That’s why my phone keeps doing that,” said another.
A third person added: “FINALLY I GET CLOSURE TO WHY VOICE MEMOS ACCIDENTALLY HAPPEN.”
“Is there a way to turn that off, Im always wondering how I accidentally have a voice memo recording,” someone else asked.
If you’re not a fan of the feature, you can switch it off by going to Settings > Messages > Toggle off Raise to Listen.
