LG’s new transparent TV could cost as much as six years’ worth of rent
The 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has recently come to a close in Las Vegas where numerous innovative products were displayed for the first time, including a new TV from LG that features a transparent screen.
Meet the LG Signature OLED T
Revealed at the CES 2024 event and set to release later this year, the LG Signature OLED T is a truly innovative piece of TV technology as it features a transparent screen.
The 77-inch 4K screen is see-through when switched off or when displaying certain images, such as an ambient weather mode, while a secondary screen can rise up when needed for when you want to watch your favorite TV show without being able to see out of your window behind.
Not only does the OLED T feature a transparent screen but its also wireless as it gets its power from a separate box that you plug in up to 32 ft (10 meters) away in the same room which is perfect for a wide range of placement options.
The TV has drawn plenty of praise at this years CES event, winning five Innovation Awards including the Best Innovation honor.
The cost could be astronomical
LG has yet to officially reveal the price of the Signature OLED T TV but based on previous models within the Signature range, it may be a little on the pricy side.
The range features the OLED M and OLED R TVs which were priced at an eye-watering $35,000 and $100,000 respectively when they were released.
Both of these earlier models feature technology that will be used in the OLED T which will likely mean that this new TVs price will fall within – or even above – the $35,000-$100,000 range.
For comparison, the average cost to rent a property in the United States is $16,464 per year according to Forbes which means it would take six years of foregoing rent in order to afford an OLED T if its price does lean towards $100,000.
To give you an idea of the clientele LG is targeting with this product, IGN covered the TV in a recent video during which the demonstrator said that the OLED T would be perfect for a New York apartment with an amazing skyline view and discussed a special light bar on the top that would appeal to an Academy Award-winning director who needs somewhere to display their Oscars.

Social media reacts
While the LG Signature OLED T TV has certainly attracted plenty of attention at CES 2024, the innovative piece of technology has divided opinion on social media, with some eager to buy their own while others have questioned the need for it.
One commenter on YouTube said: Wow! Now there’s a TV I would love to own if only I had the money!
While a second added: Take my money! Can’t wait for it!
This is a conversation piece. If you only want to show off cool art and stuff, that’s fine, said a third. But if you just want to watch regular TV this is completely useless.
That message was echoed by this commenter: Yep its a really cool gadget for about the first five minutes but it reminds me of all those toys I got at Christmas and only played with for a few days and then lost interest in because while they initially seemed cool – they didnt really do very much.
And finally, this commenter joked: If I have a gigantic window showing if it is raining or snowing, why the hell I would buy an expensive TV and put it in front of it to show me the exact same thing?
