iOS 18 makes it easier than ever to share WiFi passwords with friends

The internet is one of the world’s greatest inventions, but there’s one part about it that’s not so great… WiFi passwords.

Those long number and letter combinations are so annoying to type in. Thankfully, iOS 18 will make the process so much easier.

iOS 18’s new WiFi password sharing tool

Apple’s new operating system iOS 18, which is coming in September, has a brand new app called Passwords.

All of your passwords for various different apps and sites are stored there, as well WiFi codes for networks you have connected to.

A new feature lets you turn those passwords into a QR code which people on any device can scan to quickly and easily get the passcode.

Apple already has a clever feature that lets you instantly share the WiFi password with nearby iPhones or iPads.

However, that’s only useful if you have an Apple device. The new QR code can be shared with Android users too.

How to share WiFi passwords as QR codes

Once you have downloaded iOS 18, here’s how to share a password as a QR code:

  1. Open the Passwords app
  2. Click on ‘Wi-Fi’
  3. Choose the network
  4. Press ‘Show Network QR Code’

iOS 18 has given the Calculator a huge upgrade too, with more features than ever before.

More about Apple’s new Passwords app

Passwords is a built-in app that will automatically appear on your home screen when you download iOS 18.

The logo is three colored keys on top of each other and it’s locked using your Face ID or device’s passcode.

Apple says it “makes it easy for users to access their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes”.

The app also includes alerts if your passwords are easy to guess, have been used multiple times or appear in known data leaks.

iOS 18 will be available to download on the iPhone XS and all later models in mid-September 2024.
