Ice swimmer gets stuck under frozen lake and frantically looks for exit in ‘worst nightmare’

An old video of a Slovakian ice swimmer getting stuck under a frozen lake and frantically trying to find an exit has resurfaced this week.

The terrifying incident happened two years ago, in January 2022 and the 31-year-old athlete Boris Oravec shared the viral clip on TikTok.

Ice swimmer struggles to find exit

In the viral video, the Slovakian athlete dives underneath the ice and begins doing beautiful butterfly strokes in the freezing water.

All seems to be going well at first as he swims in a perfectly straight line, following the route to another hole in the ice.

However, he suddenly starts to veer off course and one of his team begins bashing on the ice hectically to get his attention.

Oravec then realises he has gone in the wrong direction and starts swimming back the other way but appears to be very lost.

The team on top of the ice continue trying to point him in the right direction but he clearly can’t hear or see them very well.

They try breaking the ice with their feet to help him escape and huge cracks form, but the pressure fails to make a hole.

Eventually, the swimmer understands what they are saying and grabs a rope under the ice which guides him back to the exit.

‘Worst nightmare caught on camera’

The video was reshared on Twitter/X this week with the caption “worst nightmare caught on camera” and has had more than 23 million views.

It’s creeping everyone out, with one person commenting: “It’s so scary, for both the guy under the ice and for the people who are watching him drown. At least he didn’t panic and kept his calm while reaching for the rope!”

“Being under the ice is one thing, but I cant imagine being the person above the ice. Imagine feeling so helpless while you can visibly see the person drowning,” said another.

A third person added: “The way they were screaming and this music was playing it seemed like a movie, but this time i know the characters are real and i felt the horror they were experiencing. Chills you to the bone.”

Oravec is a four time world champion in hockey who is also a CrossFit athlete and ice cross player, a winter extreme sport which involves downhill skating on a walled track.
