I tried the Sleepy Girl Mocktail and it was just a bit ‘meh’

Everyone is talking about the Sleepy Girl Mocktail right now, a drink said to make you feel exhausted before bed and give you the perfect night’s sleep. I decided to give it a try after seeing it all over my TikTok, but I wasn’t best impressed.

There’s nothing worse than a bad night’s sleep. You feel tired and groggy in the morning, and regular sleep deprivation can cause serious health issues, including risk of diabetes and heart disease. So, it’s no surprise people are looking for a quick sleep fix.

Sleepy Girl Mocktail goes viral

The ‘Sleepy Girl Mocktail’ consists of three ingredients, tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and soda water, which are mixed together and consumed around half an hour before going to bed.

It was first shared by a TikTok user called Calee Shea in January 2023, who wrote: “You’re making sleepy girl shots for the best sleep of your life.”

The combination of ingredients is supposed to help you sleep by increasing a hormone called melatonin, which rises at night and returns to normal during the day, which controls how and when you sleep.

“Tart cherry juice has a high concentration of melatonin – the hormone that induces drowsiness at bedtime,” dietitian Samantha Cassetty told Today. “Theres good evidence that drinking tart cherry juice can improve sleep duration and quality.”

She explained magnesium promotes relaxation, is also involved in regulating melatonin, “which guides your sleep-wake cycle and kickstarts the feeling of sleepiness,” and regulates the stress hormone cortisol.

“When you have adequate magnesium, you may feel calmer and have fewer physical symptoms of stress, making it easier to sleep,” she continued.

It was just a bit ‘meh’

I tried the ‘Sleepy Girl Mocktail’ for three nights in a row, using the correct recipe of cup pure tart cherry juice, 1 tablespoon of magnesium powder and a splash of soda water. Like everyone on TikTok, I even put it in a wine glass to feel extra fancy.

However, unfortunately, I didn’t really notice much of a difference. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted great, and I did sleep well. I didn’t wake up in the night and felt ready for the day when my alarm went off in the morning – but I don’t think I can put it down to the mocktail.

The only way I can describe it is just a bit ‘meh’. I had a good sleep, but I didn’t get that groundbreaking feeling people on TikTok are describing where they felt like they slept on clouds and woke up feeling like an entire new woman.

In my opinion, it’s really not worth the hype. However, I’m a good sleeper anyway – so it might work better for someone else. Personally, I think training my body into a great sleep routine by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day is the key to having amazing rest.

I’m not the only one

Cassetty explained to CNN tht the drink isn’t “necessarily going to be like a magic bullet the minute you consume it” but it does contain ingredients that “can support healthy sleep”.

Thankfully, I’m not the only one who didn’t get that “magic bullet” feeling,” with one person writing on Twitter/X: “The Sleepy Girl Mocktail did not work for me! In fact, it kept me up 3 hours longer than I would have normally stayed up.”

“Not me thinking the TikTok Sleepy Girl Mocktail would make me woozy and make me pass out like in the movies,” said another, while someone else agreed: “The Sleepy Girl Mocktail has made me not sleep and given me a tummy ache.”

Many are experiencing stomach issues after drinking the mocktail due to the prebiotic soda, which can trigger digestive discomfort, bloating and gas.

Healthline explains some other ways to improve sleep include reducing blue light exposure from electronic devices in the evening, not consuming caffeine late in the day, setting your bedroom temperature, taking a relaxing bath or shower and creating a calm environment.

Sorry TikTok, the Sleepy Girl Mocktail is a no from me.
