I started doing One Hour Speed Cleans, now cleaning no longer feels like a chore
Everyone has that one chore they hate doing. Whether it’s washing the clothes, cooking dinner or vacuuming, you put it off for as long as possible.
For me, it’s always been cleaning – but the One Hour Speed Clean has changed that. The trend is circling TikTok right now, but a cleaning expert says this one’s “more than just a fleeting fad”.

One Hour Speed Clean goes viral
The idea is simple. You set a timer for exactly 60 minutes and see how much of your home you can clean in that time. Once it goes off, that’s it – stop cleaning immediately.
You can do anything, like tidying the kitchen, mopping the floors, hanging the washing out, changing the bed or dusting. The only rule is you must do it within an hour.
The trend was popularised by a British TikTok user called Roo who has racked up more than 573,000 followers filming herself cleaning and tidying her apartment.
“Let’s do a one-hour mid-week lunch break speed clean to figure out exactly how much we can get done in an hour,” she said in a January video.
The TikTok user set a timer on her iPad and got to work, cleaning her sofa, wiping her dining table, putting the coats away, stacking the dishwasher and wiping down the kitchen.
I’ve started doing speed cleans
After seeing the trend on TikTok, I decided to start doing One Hour Speed Cleans whenever my home needs a good tidy up and having that time limit has been revolutionary. Cleaning no longer feels like a chore!
As someone who lives in a flat, an hour is enough time to do loads of basic cleaning. One evening, I managed to vacuum and mop all the floors, clean up the kitchen, stack the dishwasher, do some general tidying up and dust all the surfaces.
The following day, set a timer again and changed the bed sheets, cleaned up the entire bathroom, put some clean clothes away, and did a load of washing. Then, that was my entire home cleaned in just two hours, and I could sit down and relax afterwards. It’s amazing how much you can get done!
Having that time limit forces you to be efficient and get the job done as quickly as possible without any distractions, while still being thorough. I used to get sidetracked and before I knew it, hours had passed and I’d hardly got any cleaning done at all.

Cleaning trend approved by expert
Ryan Knoll, who owns the Phoenix and Tucson-based cleaning company Tidy Casa, says he’s seen plenty of trends “come and go” – but the One Hour Speed Clean is one that actually resonates with his “practical, no-nonsense approach”.
He told The Focus it’s “more than just a fleeting TikTok fad” for four reasons:
- Efficiency Boost: When you’re racing against the clock, you’re forced to focus. This means no getting sidetracked. It’s about getting down to business and making visible progress, fast.
- Decision Making: With only an hour, you’ve got to prioritize. This teaches you to make a plan about what really needs cleaning. Going in with a plan is always better, no matter what youre doing!
- Stress Reduction: Knowing you’re only committed for an hour eases the dread of cleaning. It’s a manageable chunk of time that can fit into any schedule, making it less likely for you to put it off until your home reaches ‘disaster zone’ status.
- Sense of Accomplishment: There’s something incredibly satisfying about setting a goal and achieving it within a set timeframe. Even if everything isn’t perfect, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve, giving you a little boost of pride in your home.
“I have a friend who turned this one-hour speed clean into a weekly ritual, blasting her favorite tunes and rocking out,” he said. “Not only did her home stay consistently clean, but she also said it was the most fun she’d ever had cleaning.”
Try doing a One Hour Speed Clean this week, and I bet it will change your life too!
