Hungry Canadian tourist discovers holiday destination has strange self-service store size of phone box

The internet has birthed yet another reason you shouldn’t cheap on holidays as two Canadian tourists found themselves starving with only a phone booth of food to keep them satisfied.

Even if you’re up to date on your flight attendant slang, journeying abroad for a break can be a stressful experience. You have to contend with flight face, overcome language barriers, and that’s even before you’ve made it to your destination.

When you budget travel too hard

Canadian tourists Kristina (@candidsbykristina) and her friend were on holiday in Iceland when they found themselves in desperate need of food. Their hilarious ordeal has since accumulated 1.7 million views and over 100k likes.

They arrived in Iceland at the start of August only to find that it was a public holiday and the grocery stores were closed. They also passed a convenience store, which was also shut.

Upon arriving at a small village, Google Maps told them there was an open grocery store nearby. Unfortunately, grocery store was a strong term.

Giggling, the girls approached the “self-service” grocery store as they slid back the glass door to show bowls of veggies, pasta, and cans of produce.

“You write a note,” they questioned, clearly confused by what the process entails.

Kristina might have predicted some pushback from online communities as she added context to the hilarious situation in the comments.

I just wanted to clarify, this video is meant to be lighthearted. I genuinely loved Iceland and all of the food was delicious. I arrived in Iceland on August 5th on a public holiday and the grocery stores were closed, then the next day while passing by a Bonus grocery store, it was still closed and didn’t open until 11:00am so we continued driving. We then arrived at this small village to camp at for the night. We went to find the “grocery store” listed on Google maps and this is what we discovered. We are laughing because we were hungry and thought we were walking to a bigger store. We are not laughing at this style of food pantry. We think it’s awesome that everyone uses the honour system here and that this is in the community. We also think it is very cool to see food farmed using the natural geothermal energy. We did plan ahead in case we ended up in a more rural area – we had dehydrated camping meals, protein bars, and oatmeal with us. Iceland does have lots of grocery stores just not in the area we were staying in this night. We hope no one takes offence to video as we truly loved every minute of this trip. Iceland is an amazing country and should be on everyone’s bucket list! #iceland #budgettravel #funny #travelvlog #campervan

Some said they lacked imagination

While most people found the ordeal funny, some did say that Kristina and her friend lacked the imagination to turn the self-service grocery items into a meal.

“Okay, but those tomatoes and that bread? would make a killer cold lunch,” one person said, to which the original poster responded, “It was dehydrated fish sticks, not bread, we didnt want to take anything as we felt maybe the locals rely on it. We ended up just eating some oatmeal that we brought in our carry-on from home.”

Another person said: “Id be calling that number asking where Chips and Pop is.”

“There is the info for their bank number so you can transfer them the cost. You write what you take. And then do a transfer,” another theorized.
