How to unmute Notes on Instagram as 2022 update rolls out new feature

Instagram rolls out its new Notes feature this month – but how can you mute and unmute notes on the social media app?

On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, Instagram announced an update which introduces a number of new features to the photo-sharing platform, and they share a few similarities with other social media apps such as BeReal and Twitter.

The new Notes feature, which seems to take inspiration from another short-form message-sharing platform, allows users to create a status to share with followers that stays on your profile for 24 hours. It is currently only available in certain areas, but is expected to roll out globally soon.

So, can you mute and unmute Notes? If you’re getting tired of the new feature already or just want it off your Instagram, here’s what you need to know.

Where to find the new Notes feature?

The Instagram Notes feature is a new space to share thoughts, ask questions, or post a status right above your DM inbox, founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote in anInstagram post. It currently has a 60-character limit per Note.

To access Notes, you need to open your DM inbox and youll see Notes appear in a row above your chats. Just like Stories appear beneath the search bar. Then, click on your profile icon at the left of the screen where it says Leave a Note. You can choose to share the Note with followers you follow back or close friends.

Unlike Instagram Stories, you cannot view how many people have seen your Notes.

You can mute anyone you don’t want to see on Instagram Notes

If you don’t want to get Note updates from all the followers you follow back, or you just want a break from the new feature, you can mute Notes.

You can choose who to mute on this new feature by heading to your DM inbox. You can see who is posting Notes in this section. Swipe through the Notes list to find who you wish you mute. Long press on the Note and then a menu tab with the Instagram profile in question will pop up.

The first option presented on the menu tab will show as “mute Notes.” Once selected, you will no long have Notes pop up from the account in question.

How to unmute Notes on Instagram

If you want to start seeing an Instagram user’s Notes again, you can reverse the mute function easily.

Head to theInstagramprofile of the account you want tounmute. Click on the following button with the drop down arrow to see a new menu tab pop up. This will then show a number of options including ‘Add to close friends list’ and ‘Restrict’. You will also see the ‘Mute’ option.

Click on ‘Mute’ and it will take you through to another tab. If you’ve muted the account’s Notes, then the switch will be turned on (turned blue). You can slide back the switch so it turns grey, signalling you’ve unmuted the account.

More new features introduced to Instagram this December 2022

Following in the footsteps of this year’s viral trend BeReal, Instagram now offers its users the chance to share Candid Stories. This feature prompts users ‘be candid’ with a daily notification reminder. You will then take a snapshot using your front and back cameras, along with the time the image was taken, to show what you are really doing at that moment. Instagram will send you a daily reminder to get candid with your friends and followers. You can snap candids using the Stories camera or as a multi-author Story.

Besides Candid Stories, Instagram are planning to roll out Group Profiles. Here, you will be able to become a member of a group, which takes inspiration from a group chat, but with pictures instead. Here, the content will only be shared to group members instead of followers, and it will be posted on the Group Profile instead of your own.

Instagram are also planning to roll out collaborative collections. This means that the content you save can be saved in a shared folder. Looking to share your favorite fits or yummy recipes? The new collaborative collection feature is for you.
