How to turn on Stolen Device Protection on iOS 17.3

Following the latest iOS update, iPhone users are being afforded more protection in the event their phone is stolen.

While each new Apple update brings an avalanche of useless features that seem pointless, there are some diamonds in the rough. You might remember that, back in 2020, iPhones introduced widgets in their iOS14 update, or that 2022 saw the rise of lock-screen customization.

The iOS update came this week

On Monday, Apple released its iOS 17.3 system update, bringing with it a list of new features and fixes. Among them was the Stolen Device Protection, which protects customers in the rare situation when their phone is stolen while open.

Essentially, the feature stops would-be thieves from locking you out of your own device after it has been stolen.

Apple said: When Stolen Device Protection is turned on, more sensitive operations require a Security Delay: a successful Face ID or Touch ID, an hour wait, then an additional successful biometric authentication.

Speaking to USA TODAY, tech journalist Joanna Stern explained that such crimes are a growing issue.

Many weekends, I wake up with emails from victims who tell me this exact thing just happened to them. Theyve lost decades of photos and life-savings, and they were shocked that their iPhone wasnt as protected as they thought it was, she said. We dont know exact statistics on this [crime], but Ive spoken with law enforcement in cities around the world who say, its becoming a big problem, and we dont know what to do about it.
