How to turn off YouTube’s new ambient mode feature
Ambient mode is one of YouTube’s latest features to appear across the video-sharing platform, but how can you turn it off?
YouTube creators and users that have dark mode already turned on may have recently noted that the background of videos has started to reflect the colors in posts and videos.
The change is due to the newly introduced ambient mode feature, which sees the background adapt to match content.
For those who don’t want ambient mode enabled, you can opt to turn it off. We break down how users can disable the new feature.
Ambient mode adds a splash of color to YouTube’s watching experience
On Monday (October 24), YouTube confirmed the video-sharing platform was getting a new updated look as it listed some features that would add to users watching experience.
One of the new features was the introduction of ambient mode, which adds a bit of color to the background of the YouTube site to match the content being played.
As explained on YouTube’s Offical Blog, instead of “detracting from viewers habits,” the new feature is intended to draw users into content and give videos more of a “greater focus.”
How does YouTube’s ambient mode work
The Ambient mode adds a touch of color to the site as it enables a new dynamic background to reflect videos in real time.
It essentially sees the colors of content on the video-sharing platform reflected in the surrounding background of the site while users are watching.
Ambient mode is available on the YouTube website on both a computer or laptop and via the app on mobile devices.
To add a new colorful experience to your YouTube watching experience, users must first have dark mode activated wherever they are watching from.
As explained on YouTube Help, once dark mode is enabled, the ambient mode is also turned on automatically.
How to turn off ambient mode on YouTube
As mentioned, the feature is automatically enabled when dark mode is turned on. However, you can choose to turn the ambient mode off.
To do so, users must have a video playing so that they can access the settings gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
After selecting the settings icon, a list of different video options should appear on the screen, including an ambient mode option.
To turn the feature off, users can select the ambient mode option, which will result in a pop-up message at the bottom of the screen confirming the feature has been turned off.
