How to turn off Instagram read receipts with 2024 update
Instagram is finally allowing users to read DM conversations without letting the other person know by allowing people to turn off their read receipts.
It’s finally here! Picture-sharing giant Instagram has joined the rest of the world by allowing us to be as sneaky as we like when sending DMs on the platform. Just like on Apple‘s iMessage service, users can now choose whether or not the people they are messaging can tell if they have viewed their latest message.
How to turn off Instagram read receipts
Turning your read receipts off is a simple way to give yourself a piece of mind by allowing you to scroll through an Instagram conversation as many times as you like, without the other person knowing you’ve seen their most recent messages.
And enabling the new feature couldn’t be simpler. To turn off your Instagram read receipts, simply follow these steps:
- Start by Opening Instagram and navigating towards your Direct Messages.
- Proceed to select one of your DM conversations.
- From there, click on the name of the person you have been chatting with.
- Press the ‘Privacy & Safety’ button marked by the padlock.
- You will then be presented with a ‘Read receipts’ button, which you can proceed to toggle on/off.
How to update your Instagram on Apple and IOS
If you do not have the option to toggle your read receipts, it may be because you do not have the latest version of Instagram downloaded to your device.
To install the latest version of Instagram on an IOS device, follow the steps below:
- Start the App Store application.
- Select your profile, which is located in the top right-hand corner.
- Scroll down to the ‘Updates’ section.
- If your Instagram is due an update it will be listed under ‘Upcoming Automatic Updates’.
- If so, simply speed up the process by pressing the ‘Update’ button next to the Instagram logo.

For an Android device, follow these steps:
- Locate the Google Play Store on your device.
- Search for Instagram, which should already be installed.
- From there, you will see if the app is due for any updates, which you can then install, or if it is already up to date.
If you have installed the latest version of Instagram but you are still unable to access the read receipts feature, do not fret, as sometimes large-scale changes like these can take a few days to roll out to all accounts.
