How to properly de-ice your car after expert warns against TikTok hack

As temperatures plunge across the world, an expert has warned against using a viral TikTok hack to de-ice your car window.

Parts of the US are currently experiencing otherworldly snowstorms that have resulted in numerous deaths and the postponement of multiple sports games. From Sunday, 95 million people nationwide were hit with weather warnings. But, once the blizzards have passed and the world returns to normal, dont take de-icing hacks from TikTok without checking their validity first.

The viral TikTok hack is catching on

Each year, creators share their unique ways to get rid of pesky ice in the morning. De-icing your car can be a stressful ordeal as you attempt to rush to work with just minutes to spare. But rushing the process could spell disaster.

In 2024, TikTokers are suggesting that you should fill a zip-lock bag with hot water and run it over the icy windows. Naturally, the ice melts fairly quickly and you can be on your way.

Ensure to use WARM WATER (not hot!) to de-ice your windows. We hear an @Asda bag works especially well 😉❄️ #lifehacks #deicingthecar #tiktokhack

Omg trying this tomorrow, one person gushed on TikTok.

Someone else said: These hacks are Hacktackular.

A lot easier to get a scraper, a third said, to which a fourth confirmed, I saw someone doing this in the morning on the way to school.

The UK is also experiencing a sudden drop in temperatures, though nowhere near as extreme as America. As such, Dorry Potter, an expert at National Scrap Car, warned against using hot water. However, if you insist on doing it, only use lukewarm water.

They told the UKs Express: “A hack that circulates every year is using warm water in a zip lock bag and rubbing it on the windscreen.

“Motorists are advised to be cautious when applying anything heated to their windscreen as the dramatic change in temperature can cause small cracks to appear in the glass which can cause the screen to shatter when another bout of frost arrives.

While a reprieve is expected later today, Oregon has been hit the hardest with 50,000 people left without power. Early forecasts also predicted that Portland, Salem and Eugene would experience roughly half an inch of ice on Wednesday.

Of the 14 dead across the country, half of them were located within Oregon as five were killed by hypothermia and two by fallen trees. Deaths have also been recorded in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

On Monday, 3,500 flights were cancelled across the states which was followed by a further 2,300 cancellations on Tuesday. In other travel routes, citizens across the south have been urged to stay off the roads.

While the storms are said to subside for a while today, they are expected to move South as the Northern and Central Plains experience below-average temperatures.

Although this surge of Arctic air does not look quite as extreme as the first, bitterly cold temperatures are still possible portions the Central Plains this weekend, the NWS said.
