According to an audit tool provided by market research company SparkToro, 49.3 per cent of accounts following the official @POTUS Twitter account are fake .
The US official government Twitter account currently has 22.3 million followers. This means the actual number of real followers Joe Biden likely has is just under 11 million.
SparkToro is a market research and audience intelligence tool. It conducted the audit in collaboration with Twitter analytics tool Followerwonk.

Its rigorous analysis ran from 13 to 15 May and examined datasets including active and non-active accounts. It concluded that 19.42% of all Twitter accounts fit a conservative definition of fake or spam accounts .
SparkToro conducted a similar analysis of Donald Trumps Twitter followers in 2018, and declared the results interesting .
It analysed every single one of the accounts 54,788,369 followers and found that 61% of Donald Trumps Twitter followers were spam, bot, propaganda and/or inactive accounts .
Why are audits of fake Twitter accounts taking place?

SparkToro and Followerwonks joint Twitter analysis found that nearly a fifth of Twitter accounts are likely to be fake or spam accounts .
They analysed a random sample of 44,058 accounts.

Their definition of spam or fake , say the auditors, “may differ from Twitters own”.
It is as follows: Spam or Fake Twitter accounts are those that do not regularly have a human being personally composing the content of their tweets, consuming the activity on their timeline, or engaging in the Twitter ecosystem.
The analysis found that 70.23% of Elon Musks 93.4 million followers are likely to be fake or spam accounts. That leaves 26.8 million active followers . In other words, he still has more real Twitter followers than Joe Bidens @POTUS account. But he may have a larger proportion of fake or spam followers.
