How honey dippers work is actually ‘genius’ and you need one in your kitchen
If you’ve ever bought an expensive jar of honey, it may have come with a strange wooden contraption called a honey dipper.
You probably looked at it, threw it into a drawer and opted to use a normal metal spoon to decant the sweet substance instead, unaware that the wooden utensil is actually pretty remarkable.

How honey dippers actually work
A honey expert has gone viral on TikTok after explaining how the dipper actually works, and people are totally amazed.
Think back to every time you’ve spooned honey over your porridge, used the sticky liquid in a cake or brushed it over your honey mustard chicken. What happens? A little bit goes onto the food and the rest stays annoyingly attached to the spoon.
You then have to get another tool, say a knife or spoon, to try and remove the honey, which results in two utensils being covered in the substance and hardly any on your food. Eventually, you give up and lick the spoon – and your hands are super sticky.
Believed to have been invented in ancient China, the honey dipper avoids all of this mess and creates eating a super simple way to get honey out of the jar.
Charles Biolo, who founded the mead-making kit and raw wildflower honey company Golden Hive Mead, explained that the contraption allows you to stop and start the honey flow.
You dip the wooden utensil into the honey and if you hold it still, the liquid will drip off quickly. However, as soon as you start to rotate the dipper, the honey stops dripping, allowing you to move it across the counter without making a mess.
As soon as you’ve shifted the honey from the jar to the top of the bowl, you stop twisting and the liquid will start to flow again. Any excess honey can then be returned to the jar and there is no cleaning up required.
The dipper makes eating honey a much better experience too by drizzling a controlled stream across your food. When you use a spoon, the honey drips off in big blobs.
You never have to rinse off the wooden dipper either because it’s designed to stay inside the jar at all times. You just pop it right back inside until the next time you need to use the honey. See the clever utensil in action:
‘That’s actually genius’
People are finally discovering what the contraption is for thanks to the TikTok video, and it actually makes a lot of sense.
One person commented: “Finally I know why =O=O=O.”
“This was genuinely helpful. Thank you!” said another.
A third person added: “Always wanted to know.”
“Legit always wondered this,” someone else added.
Another said: “That’s actually genius.”
