Hilarious social media trend imagines Disney bought rights to the Bible

Hilarious claims are flooding the internet that Disney has bought the rights to the Bible for a new series. It’s not true of course, but people are running with the idea.

The fake news has prompted a comedic social media trend where people are imagining what the religious show or movie would be like, and it’s just as funny as it sounds.

Disney has not bought rights to the Bible

It all started when a TikTok user explained she just read an article about Disney “buying the rights to The Bible” in a video which has gone viral on the app.

“Yes, The Bible,” Claretas Voice said, wrongly repeating that Disney spent $7.2 billion on the purchase to “produce this Bible series”.

She said they bought the rights to both the NIV Bible (New International Version) and the RSV (Revised Standard Version).

The RSV is an English translation published in 1952 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA. Biblica then published the NIV in 1978.

She also claimed Disney “deleted” Matthew 17-21 from both versions – but all of it is fake news and Disney has not bought the rights to the Bible at all.

Fake news has been circling for years

Fake articles about Disney and The Bible have been circling for years, and this isn’t the first time the trend has gone viral on social media.

In 2015, a parody article on The Modern Philosopher said: “Disney has purchased the rights to The Bible and plans to publish at least one new book in the series.”

It even included a fake quote from a Disney spokesperson saying: “We love trilogies, and no trilogy is more ready for a reboot than the tale of God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit.”

A similar 2018 spoof from the Babylon Bee, which is the one the TikTok user read, also claimed: “Disney is buying the intellectual property rights to the Bible for $7.02 billion from its author.”

The satirical piece said that Disney planned to release a major Bible sequel calledThe Christ Awakens, followed by36 more planned sequels, reboots, remakes, and spin-offs.

Social media imagines Disney Bible movie

People are running with the idea and the fake news has prompted a hilarious trend where people are imagining a Disney Bible movie.

It comes after The Babylon Bee, who describe themselves as the “definitive source of fake news you can trust,” re-shared their 2018 article on Twitter/X.

They posted a hilarious Star Wars-style movie poster with the title “The Bible: The Christ Awakens” – and the responses are so funny.

In the comments, one person joked: “They’re replacing Jesus with Cardi B!”

“Herod will be played by Will Smith,” said another.

A third person added: “Caitlyn Jenner as Moses, I can’t wait.”

Others are demanding a trailer for the fake movie!
