Hand surgeon finally reveals whether its possible to bite through your finger ‘like a carrot’

A hand surgeon has finally revealed on TikTok whether its possible to bite through your finger “like a carrot”, as the bizarre rumor goes.

Whether you heard it on TikTok or through a quick comment at work interrupted by laughter, we’ve all been told some wild things that just sound too much to be true. With so much access to information, on the other hand, what’s the point in shrugging claims off when you can ask ‘true or false?’ before actually finding the answer? Can you bite through your own finger?

It’s not possible to bite through your own finger ‘like a carrot‘, and a medical professional has now explained why.

A TikTok from Dr. Max, M.D. (@itsdrmax), a medical professional who shares insight “helping you understand med videos better,” recently shared a clip of somebody chopping carrots.

“Every time I remember someone said a carrot is the same density as a human finger” the video caption reads before showing the person chopping attempting not to gag.

Is this true? the TikTok asks. We move over to ‘Doctor Nick’, who says he’s a board-certified hand surgeon.

“While a carrot may be a similar density to the soft tissue parts of a human finger, fingers are much harder to cut through because of the bone,” he explains the science. “Bones actually require almost 1500 newtons to break, which is about twice the maximum force you can exert when you bite. So you can’t actually bite your finger off. Unless you went right through the joint. But don’t try that at home, most of us hand surgeons are busy enough already.”

Now you know! And let’s not go trying to disprove him with any other food comparisons either.

The replies on TikTok are wild

Although the hand surgeon disproves the outlandish claim, a handful of people reacted with their own eyebrow-raising stories.

“So my sister slammed a door on my cousin’s finger at 1500 newtons?” one asked.

“You’re saying I exerted 1500 newtons when I slammed my pinkie onto a table playing VR causing it to break?” another inquired. “But the entire finger didn’t get snapped in half??” somebody replied.

“Gotcha, bite at the joint when I’m in a Saw trap,” another joked.

However, others have put it best: “Don’t bite your fingers off.” Now who knows if they’re a medical professional, but that’s advice I’m not going to challenge all the same.
