Guardian Rebellion starts TikTok revolution with ‘Flowers are blooming in Antarctica’ meme

The phrase ‘Flowers are blooming in Antarctica’ is taking over social media this week as part of a new internet revolution.

People are sharing it on TikTok and Twitter/X in a bid to capture attention for global causes, but it’s leaving many confused.

‘Flowers are blooming in Antarctica’ meaning

The meme was started by a TikTok account called Guardian Rebellion which consists of “firefighters, doctors, lawyers & MORE fighting the systems of oppression”.

They have shared numerous videos using the phrase as a tagline to try and draw attention to climate change and other issues that are going on in the world.

It stems from an image which went viral in September 2023 claiming that flowers have started growing in Antarctica, so we need to take action on climate change quickly.

The image was fake and flowers are not blooming in Antarctica, but the phrase is being used months on to capture people’s attention and drive change across the globe.

No flowers are blooming in Antarctica

The image was first shared on September 21 and shows some pink flowers blooming on a patch of soil in front of a huge iceberg floating in the water.

“Flowers are now staring to bloom in Antarctica and experts say this is not good news,” text above the image says.

“This would be the first evidence of accelerated ecosystem response in Antarctica that is directly associated as a consequence of global warming, according to Nicoletta Cannone, a professor of ecology at the University of Insubria,” it continues.

However, a spokesperson for the British Antarctic Survey told USA TODAY the image “most definitely does not show Antarctic plants”.

He added that the plant in the photo looks like a Saxifraga oppositifolia, which is frequent in the Arctic, but doesn’t grow in the Antarctic.

The whole thing was fake news, but it quickly took over social media and left people fearful about the future of our planet.

Guardian Rebellion starts TikTok revolution

Guardian Rebellion is now starting a revolution to drive change in the world and people on TikTok are all for it.

One person commented: “I will fight and die for a better world… maybe it’s the purpose my life has lacked.”

“We are all lied to. I never wanted war nor voted for anything. Something has to change. I’m ready,” said another.

A third person added: “Revolutionary change requires revolutionary actions.”

It’s not clear who is actually behind the TikTok account, but they claim they are “climate activists” and “citizens for peace”.

Raising awareness and expanding, because global revolution is the answer,” their website states.

They are supporting a number of different causes including climate change, crimes against humanity and the injustice system.

However, the revolution appears to me more of a meme than an actual rebellion and nobody is taking it very seriously.
