Former Mormon breaks down the three reasons she is now an atheist

After spending the majority of her life within the Mormon church, Alyssa Grenfell turned to atheism for three distinct reasons.

Religion in the modern world is constantly debated by everyone from heads of state to the common Joe. Mormonism, though not completely separated from Christianity, is the belief system held by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While some religions have modernized, Mormons are one of the few groups that still enforce very stringent rules and regulations.

Why did Alyssa become an atheist?

Alyssa (@Alyssadgrenfell) is no stranger to opening up about her religion on the internet, having earlier detailed the confusing slang of the Mormon Church.

Earlier this week, the former believer posted a video that delved into her decision to step away from the Mormon church, and eventually, religion altogether.

Firstly, Alyssa said that most people are the religion that their parents practiced when they were kids, meaning that few people see the light and convert. Instead, you have a population of sheep-like people who have been a member of that religion since before they could make informed decisions.

“If there is a God, then he must be a really horrible person,” Alyssa continued, noting how it’s difficult to believe in a being that lets so much violence and hurt occur. “It seems that God favors those who already live in affluent societies who have access to great medical care.”

Last, and arguably Alyssa’s most important point, was the lack of evidence that God does exist. Though she did acknowledge the “evidence” that people provide, she said there is often a more logical explanation than God.

Though TikTok comment sections are usually full to the brim with scathing comebacks and personal takedowns, Alyssa’s was surprisingly cordial as they shared religious opinions.

One person wrote: “If there is a god, he could be either all-good or all-powerful. but all the evidence says he can’t be both.”

“It is understandable. You were dupped once and trust is hard after that. Faith is a relationship and when a relationship fails it is hard to get into another,” someone else said.

“My mom is very spiritual! but she made it a point that I should experiment and find my own beliefs so now I’m an atheist. Having that freedom to look at religion with a critical eye is great,” a TikTok user wrote.
