Forget spring cleaning, 3 reasons you should get your housework done now, experts say
Its tempting to think of spring and summer as the most productive times of the year. Days are longer. The weather is kind. The year is opening up. But the fall months are the most productive and the least anxiety-ridden, according to researchers and the experts we spoke to.
As the leaves change color and the days get shorter, our brains adjust to the fact that winter is coming. In some ways, its sad (and possibly even SAD) to wave goodbye to the summer months. But its not all bad. The fall months may be the best time to do essential home improvement and decorating work. Heres what the experts had to say on the matter.

Late fall could be the best time for someone to work on your house
If your house needs repairs, a new roof, or a paint job, its easy to assume that the best time of year to pay someone to do it is in the spring or summer.
Days are longer, the weather may be drier, and in some parts of the country, harsh winters are giving way to kinder springs.

However, this also means these are the busiest periods for domestic construction workers and home decorators, suggests Barbara Schumann Lamb. Shes a life strategist.
Winter or late fall might be the best time for someone to work on your house, she says. Workers are usually less busy during these seasons so that they can focus more on your project. In spring and summer, they often have many jobs and may rush, which can affect the quality of their work.
On top of this, consider the fact that in southern parts of the US, summer can bring overwhelming heat, which makes people feel less productive and more drained.
By comparison, winter is cool and pleasant, making it easier to get things done.
Kristie Tse, a psychotherapist and mental health counselor, says the same.
Early spring and late fall are ideal seasons for having work done on your house, she suggests. These times typically bring moderate weather, which often results in fewer delays due to extreme temperatures or weather-related issues.
Contractors also tend to have more availability outside of the peak summer renovation surge and the holiday rush towards the years end. Experience has shown me that during these periods, tradespeople are less overburdened, enabling them to focus more intently on quality and detail.
Research has shown that October is the most productive month of the year, followed by September and November. So if you’ve been feeling particularly industrious lately, know that you’re not alone!

Spring and fall are less anxious months for young people
Based on a recent survey of members of Generation Z which includes people born between the late 1990s and early 2010s summer and winter are the most stressful seasons for young people.
As the seasons change, external pressures like work, holidays, and social obligations can intensify feelings of anxiety, says Oryna Shestakova, head of communications at PapersOwl.
Conversely, respondents said spring and fall were significantly less stressful and anxiety-inducing than summer and winter.
Kristie says her clients tend to be more introspective during the winter months, often due to decreased daylight and the natural inclination to reflect as the year comes to a close.
Longer days and hotter weather encourage a certain type of social interaction often outdoors and away from home while fall and winter can offer more opportunities for looking inwards, embarking on longer-term personal projects, and reimagining ones domestic setup.
This is another reason to work on your house now rather than after winter. You’re more likely to spend more of your days in it than you will in spring and summer. Why not do the work now, when it will make the most difference?
