Flower more ‘elegant’ than a rose

Florist Kelly Par, who owns Burns Florist in San Rafael, California, told The Focus a Ranunculus is the perfect Valentine’s Day flower choice.

“With 20 years in the floral industry, I would choose ranunculusas a great alternative to roses,” she said. “They have layers of delicate petals that create such an elegant appearance.”

The flowers are similar to roses in appearance, with multiple layers of very thin petals packed densely together, and grow up to 30cm tall.

Theycome in a wide array of colors from stunning pinks and purples to shades of red, yellow, orange and classic white.

The flowers have huge heads which are real showstoppers, and are bound to sweep your partner off their feet this Valentine’s.

The ranunculus has a lovely meaning

On top of the beautiful look, Par explained that the ranunculus has a lovely meaning behind it too, enhancing the Valentine’s magic.

They have a “symbolic representation of charm, attractiveness, and radiance,” she said, and are “associated with joy and happiness”.

She said that this makes them the “ideal flower” for celebrations and special occasions across the entire year.

“Overall, their beauty and symbolic meaning make ranunculusan excellent and favorite alternative to roses.”

Not to be confused with buttercups

However, you need to be careful when picking your Valentine’s bouquet as the flower has a few different types.

Ranunculus is actually the name of a large genus which consists of around 1800 different species of flowering plants.

The most common kind is ranunculus repens, better known as buttercups, which are seen across Europe, North America and South America.

While the small yellow flowers are pretty when spotted in a field on a bright summer day, they’re not exactly Valentine’s worthy.

It’s the tecolote ranunculus you’re looking for, and a big bunch of these in your partner’s favorite color is sure to go down a treat.
