Firefighter’s tips that could ‘save your life’ at home
A TikTok creator named Leon (@livestrongtogether) has been a firefighter for 18 years and has shared three pieces of advice for your day-to-day at home, that could save your life in a fire.
Firstly, Leon says you should switch off all appliances before you go to bed. Your washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, and other electrical appliances should not be left on overnight or unattended if you are leaving the house.
London Fire Brigade explains the importance of bedtime safety checks. Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on- like your fridge or freezer. Don’t leave things like mobile phones, tablets, or e-cigarettes charging overnight.
Secondly, you should shut all doors in the house when going to bed or going out, because if a fire occurs in any room, a door can slow it down.

With the doors and windows closed, the fire won’t have oxygen to burn, and it will stay where it is, giving people in the house more time to get out and also help protect your property, according to the Fire Safety Research Institute.
In another TikTok video, Leon showed an example of a real fire behind a door to demonstrate why it is better to keep doors closed if possible.
Leon said that any door closed would help stop the smoke from getting through and prevent the fire from spreading through much more effectively than if it was open just slightly.
Candles can be a dangerous fire hazard
Finally, Leon speaks about the dangers of candles. “They are really bad for starting fires, but if you must use them, that’s fine. Just don’t leave them on when you’re not in the room.”
You should especially not leave candles in dangerous places such as on a window sill, next to blinds and curtains that could easily catch fire.
While candles bring a sense of beauty and tranquility to a home, a lighted candle is also an open flame and therefore a potential fire hazard if not carefully monitored.
An estimated 8,200 home fires each year are started by candles, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests that 85 percent of candle fires could be avoided if consumers followed three basic safety rules, as National Candle Association reports.
Just like TikToker and firefighter Leon advised, you should never leave a burning candle unattended, you should never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire, and you must keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
