Fashion stylist says wearing a brunch dress to prom is a ‘smart move’

Prom season is approaching and a new dress trend has taken over 2024, but it’s dividing everyone. Forget big, puffy, sequin-covered frocks, teens are opting for a more casual look this year, with the ‘Brunch Dress’ taking the lead.

Some think the new prom trend is chic and pretty, while others say wearing a brunch dress to prom is totally insane and far too informal. We spoke to a fashion stylist, who said it’s a “smart move” for loads of different reasons.

‘Brunch Prom Dress’ trend

‘Brunch Dresses’ are the kind of dress you’d wear to a family brunch. They’re long, floral, girly, frocks that would typically be worn to church on a Sunday, or Easter dinner.

They’re pretty and summery, but not very formal, and far from the usual glitz and glamor of traditional prom attire.

The trend has taken over TikTok this month, with many showing off their 2024 prom dresses on the video app.

One user revealed her brunch prom dress this week, a long, white, ruffled dress covered in dainty grey flowers.

Someone else showed a similar long, white dress, with blue flowers all over it and said: “I LOVE MY EASTER PROM DRESS.”

Prom dresses divide the internet

Some are obsessed with the casual prom dress style, arguing that the 2024 trend is elegant, different and beautiful.

One person wrote on TikTok: “I think the Easter prom dresses are so pretty! It’s a nice change from the regular prom dress.”

“OMG I love it it’s giving Mamma Mia,” said another – referring to the 2008 Abba movie set on a Greek island.

A third person added: “The dress is adorable and after prom you can wear it again. That’s a win.”

Someone else said they love their brunch prom dress and don’t care for “super tight, revealing, sparkle bombs” they will never wear again.

However, others aren’t keen at all and think prom should be a more formal occasion, with red carpet-style dresses.

“Keep brunch dresses at brunch and PROM DRESSES AT PROM,” one TikTok user said.

Someone else agreed: “I feel like brunch dresses are for everyday wear, but prom doesn’t happen every day. When you look back at your pictures they’re gonna look basic.”

Another person said the brunch dresses are pretty, but prom is supposed to be a “formal dress event”.

Fashion stylist says ‘smart move’

Affordable fashion stylist LaTressa J. Miller told The Focus that wearing a brunch dress is a great idea because it’s a sustainable, fashionable and budget-friendly option.

“In today’s economy, folks are about making their wardrobe work harder. Wearing something versatile, like a brunch dress for prom, is a smart move. Why splurge on a one-time outfit?” she said.

Miller added that these dresses “offer more than just a trendy look for prom night” and are “practical choices that can be worn again,” perfect for today’s mindful consumer.

The fashion stylist believes the brunch prom dress trend reflects a shift in fashion towards more relaxed and versatile styles. Instead of adhering to traditional formal attire, young people are embracing comfort and practicality without sacrificing style.

She said it’s a refreshing change that aligns with the current emphasis on individuality and self-expression.
