Fashion expert’s crazy vodka spray trick will keep your clothes fresh between washes

When your clothes start getting dirty, what do you do? Throw them straight in the washing machine, right?

Well, a fashion expert says you shouldn’t actually wash garments every time they get a bit musty – but there’s a crazy hack you can do instead.

Vodka spray trick to keep clothes fresh

The fashion expert at Superdry said all you need to do is spray a bit of vodka on your garments to keep them smelling fresh. Yes, vodka!

“For delicate items, some professionals in the costume industry go as far as recommending a gentle spritz of vodka to eliminate odour and help preserve the fabric’s integrity,” they said.

This helps the item last longer by avoiding unnecessary washing and freshens the garment without risking damage.

It’s perfect for dry-clean only items that cannot be washed in a machine, or delicate clothes you don’t want to wash too often.

Simply fill up a spray bottle with a mixture of vodka and water and spray it over the garment to eradicate foul smells and kill bacteria without damaging the item.

We are all over washing our clothes

You can use the vodka trick on normal clothes too, like jeans and jumpers, instead of putting them in the washer every time.

Washing clothes breaks down the fibers in the garment and contributes to shrinkage, colour fading, and premature deterioration of your clothes. So, washing less will help your clothing last longer, while also reducing energy bills and saving you money.

Whirlpool recommends washing shirts and blouses after 1-2 wears, paints after 2-3 wears and jeans after 2-5 wears. They say you don’t need to wash sweaters until they’ve been worn 6 times if worn with an undershirt, and suits can wait for 5 or 6 wears.

The only ones you need to wash after every wear are workout clothes, due to the sweat that builds up while exercising.

8 ways to make clothes last longer

The expert at Superdry has listed eight ways we can all make our clothes last longer:

  1. Wash smart not often: Only wash your clothes when it’s absolutely necessary, not after every wear just for the sake of it.
  2. Ditch driers: Stop using driers and hang your clothes to dry outside instead as this minimizes wear and tear caused by heat exposure.
  3. Use cooler washes: Putting your washer on a colder setting will conserve energy, preserve the vibrant colours of your clothing, and reduce the chances of shrinkage.
  4. Spot clean stains: Instead of washing the entire item, spot clean small stains and spills in one area by hand.
  5. Use laundry bags: Wash delicate items like lingerie and knitwear in mesh laundry bags, which provide an added layer of protection against stretching and snagging.
  6. Iron carefully: Ironing can ruin clothing too, so always use an appropriate temperature setting and a clean, damp pressing cloth for delicate fabrics.
  7. Store clothing correcting: Proper storage will help clothes maintain their shape and condition. For example, knitwear should be folded. Also, use the correct hangers for the weight and shape.
  8. Revive old items: Always try and repair old garments before replacing them, and invest in higher-quality clothing to help items last longer.
