Family goes viral after finding Krogers cheese in freezer, 35 years out of date

A family has gone viral online after confessing to keeping a block of cheese in the freezer for 35 years, despite changing freezers since.

Most homes have items in the freezer that have gone past the expiration date. 35 years however may be pushing it.

The family has kept the cheese inside of the freezer since 1988 and took to TikTok to celebrate the 35th year. Unsurprisingly, people were left shocked by the online confession and the video went viral, gaining over one million startled viewers.

The block of cheese turned 35 this year

Kayla Holtz duetted a popular video on TikTok, discussing the annual freezer clear-out that most families experience before Christmas. The initial video showed the familiar uproar as family members attempt to throw away sauces and items that have reached their expiration date, while others argue that theres no need.

The TikToker however put others to shame with her block of cheese that pushed expiration dates to the limit. This cheese turned 35 years old today, she told the camera.

Holtz showed viewers the cheese, removing it from the freezer and showing the 1988 expiration date. Happy birthday cheese, she captioned the video.

The cheese was still unsealed and in its original Kroher brand packaging, but that doesnt quite make it any more tempting to try.

The 35-year-old cheese has gone viral

After gaining over one million views, viewers were equally shocked and disgusted by the 35-year-old cheese in the TikTok video.

I would pass that down through generations at this point, reads one comment.

The fact that a new fridge was purchased and THAT WAS TRANSFERRED INTO IT, commented another user.

Oh my god and I thought the sauce from 99 in my parent’s fridge was impressive, added another.

Is it safe to freeze cheese?

Cheese isnt exactly a top choice for freezing, but it can be done and is a useful way to stop waste.

Although even at 35 years, cheese isnt likely to go bad in the freezer, it is likely to have freezer burn and an off-putting texture.

Though freezing doesnt destroy the nutrients in cheese, it affects its texture and quality, reports Healthline.

When cheese is frozen, small ice crystals form on the inside, disrupting the internal structure of the cheese. When its thawed, water is released, causing the product to dry out, become crumbly, and potentially develop a mealy texture.
