Ex-McDonald’s chef reveals what the sauce inside Breakfast Bagels actually is

McDonald’s Breakfast Bagels are back in many stores across the US, and it’s got people wondering what the sauce inside the menu item is.

The fast food chain decided to discontinue them in 2020, leaving people devastated, but they’ve just returned in select markets.

McDonald’s Breakfast Bagel sauce

The Breakfast Bagel comes in four options: Bacon, Egg & Cheese, Sausage Egg & Cheese, Steak, Egg & Cheese or just Egg & Cheese.

On the McDonald’s website, there is no sauce mentioned in any of the descriptions, but they often come topped with a white sauce when ordered.

“Our Bacon, Egg and Cheese Bagel features a toasted bagel with butter, thick-cut Applewood smoked bacon, a fluffy folded egg, and two slices of melty American cheese,” the bacon one says.

The steak option adds: “This breakfast bagel is next levelits toasted with real butter and holds a tender, juicy steak patty, a fluffy folded egg, melty American cheese and savory grilled onions.”

So what is this mystery sauce? Well, most people think it must be a standard Hollandaise or Barnaise, but that’s not quite true.

Chef reveals what the sauce is

Mike Haracz, a former McDonald’s corporate chef, went viral on TikTok in January 2023 after explaining the ingredients.

“It’s a mayonnaise base with lemon juice, but then there’s also cheddar cheese powder,” he revealed.

The chef said the sauce also contains buttermilk powder, a little touch of liquid smoke, AYE (autolyzedyeast extract) and a variety of herbs and spices.

He didn’t reveal the exact herbs, but said there is a “little bit of dill in there” and added that it’s really hard to replicate at home.

So, the breakfast sauce is McDonald’s own unique version of a Hollandaise sauce, with the addition of cheese and extra spices.

McDonald’s Breakfast Bagels return

The fast food chain told TODAY that its bagel sandwiches are “currently available at participating McDonalds in select markets,” but theyre “not available nationwide”.

There isn’t a list of restaurants where they are on sale, but you can easily check if they’ve returned in your region on the McDonald’s app.

Just go onto the menu during breakfast hours and see if the bagels are listed as an order option. If they’re not there, they are sadly not available.

McDonald’s fans are so happy that they’re back, with one person writing on Twitter/X: “The Breakfast Bagel Sandwiches from McDonald’s are back. Thank you God for answering my prayers.”

“McDonald’s brought my steak bagel back so my day was pretty damn great,” said another.
