Where the tradition started

According to NPR, the tradition of eating 12 grapes on New Years Eve dates back to 19th-century Spain. History books suggest that the tradition was copied, perhaps even ironically, from the upper class in France who would eat grapes and drink champagne on the last day of the year.

Managing to eat a grape for every chime at midnight, with each grape representing a new month, suggested a year of good luck.

Sitting under the table is a tradition in itself, followed in Latin America thats thought to welcome good luck in your love life, according to San Antonio Express News.

Its unclear exactly when, but at some point, those traditions appear to have merged and now many are sitting underneath a table at midnight to eat 12 grapes in time with the midnight chimes. It might sound easy, but it doesnt give much time to chew and swallow an entire grape before the next is due.
