Dog trainers trick to teach your dog to speak takes two simple steps

As hard as it may sound, teaching your dog to speak (read bark), only takes two single steps as long as you are holding their favorite treat.

Being able to communicate with their fur babies is every pet parent’s fantasy. While scientists are working on an AI tool to decode your puppy’s bark, you can still teach them to “speak” with a simple trick.

How to teach your dog to speak

Popular American dog trainer, Zak George, demonstrates in one of his TikTok videos the two steps to teach your dog to bark on your command.

All you need is one of your dog’s favorite treats that would get him or her excited. Now hold it in one hand and entice your pooch to bark.

Your pet may not recognize that your gesture with a treat in hand is a cue to bark. So hold it in front of its face and continue to tease. Your dog will take it as a puzzle and demonstrate all the tricks it knows to get the reward. But wait until it barks – the trick you want to teach.

If you see your dog show any signs of barking or if it does bark, reward it with the treat immediately. Continue to say “speak” to your dog until it treats it as the command to bark and continue positive reinforcement.

Even though the trick is simple, not all dogs react similarly. Sometimes, it takes minutes to teach a dog to bark other times, it could be days.

Trick to make your dog recognize its name

The first thing you want to do after bringing a puppy home is to get it to recognize its name. Just like the previous trick, this requires patience and persistence.

As your puppy may not react to its name at first, make a catchy sound that can get its interest. Give your puppy a treat as a reward when it responds to the sound.

Repeat the sound, only this time, follow it with its name and then the treat. Explaining the psychology behind this trick the dog trainer explains:

“When he acknowledged me there, I said his name so that he could begin to connect his name with paying attention to me,” he said.

Zack further explains: “I’m also right there to make sure that I offer him something amazing in order to make an impactful memorable experience.”
