Dog trainer gives his opinion on the ‘best breed’ and owners agree

For pet owners, dogs are a part of their families. However, some breeds are known for their loyalty and family-protecting instinct more than others.

Not only do they fill your life with joy, but dogs also feel the same emotions as their owners. Pet parents wouldn’t deny that their furry buddies have taught them valuable life lessons. If you’re considering extending your family, a dog behaviorist has the “best breed” for you.

Dog behaviorist suggests dog breed to protect your family

No matter the size, most dogs are very protective of their families. You may seen videos of little breeds like Chihuahuas and Dachshunds guarding their owner or their babies.

But there is one specific breed that the dog expert, trainer, and behaviorist Garret Wing of American Standard Dog Training recommends as the “best breed” known for its loyalty and protectiveness: a working line German Shepherd.

Several other dog behaviorists who have closely worked with different breeds echo Garret’s opinion about German Shepherd being among the most loyal dogs.

Aside from their behavior, there are other reasons you should consider when bringing home the said breed, which we have explained in the article ahead.

4 reasons German Shepherds are ‘best’ family dogs

  • Size – Garret explains German Shepherds are not too big or too small. “Just enough to handle business,” he says. According to the American Kennel Club, a male would weigh between 65 and 90 pounds on average, while a female, between 50 and 70 pounds.
  • Highly intelligent – German Shepherds are one of the smartest dog breeds, which makes it easier to train them. The dog behaviorist says they are known for their emotional intelligence too. “They can almost read your mind, sense your mood, and adjust accordingly,” he adds.
  • Great with family – This breed especially gets along well with the entire family, friends, and most of all, children, by reading who is a threat and who is safe to be around.
  • They can handle business – From his experience of over two decades as a police dog trainer, Garret has learned that a working line German Shepherd when trained correctly, and comes from the “right breeding and the right selection, has the drive and stamina to handle business with any bad guy.”
