Doctor urges everyone to start eating blackberries for 5 essential health benefits
If you don’t already eat them, it’s time to add blackberries to your diet because they are packed with health benefits.
A doctor has shared five reasons why everyone should love the superfood, which is great eaten on its own, sprinkled over Greek yogurt or blended into a smoothie.

5 reasons to love blackberries
“You guys know I love my berries and it’s blackberry season,” Dr Amir Khan said on Instagram. “Here are five reasons to forage for them or just buy some.”
1. They are full of vitamins
Firstly, blackberries are full of Vitamin C and Vitamin K. Vitamin C is needed for a healthy immune system, wound healing and absorbing iron, while Vitamin K is responsible for healthy blood clotting. They also contain a mineral called manganese, which keeps your bones strong and cells healthy.

2. They contain antioxidants
Next up, blackberries are full of antioxidants called polyphenols which destroy unstable molecules in your body called free radicals before they can damage your cells. The berries can also reduce inflammation as they contain a particular polyphenol called anthocyanin.
3. They are high in fiber
Eating blackberries is also a great way to get more fiber in your body, as most people don’t get enough. Fiber helps keep your gut and digestive system happy, reduces the risk of heart disease and keeps your blood sugar stable.
4. They can improve brain health
Some research suggests that blackberries can improve your brain health and prevent memory loss that’s caused by aging. This is because the antioxidants fight off free radicals in the brain too, which keep your brain cells communicating and reduce brain inflammation.
5. They keep teeth and gums healthy
Finally, blackberries have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, meaning they can fight off oral bacteria that cause tooth decay. Alongside a good dental hygiene routine, this keeps your teeth and gums healthy.
If you don’t like blackberries, most other berries are packed with health benefits too, particularly blueberries and raspberries.
