Doctor debunks common myth you can get cancer from ‘bad luck’
A doctor openly discussed the debate people can get cancer from ‘bad luck’, and while a lot of things are out of anyone’s control, medical professionals do know what causes the disease and how to try and avoid them.
One in three people are affected by cancer, and that could be facing the disease yourself or a loved one and friend being diagnosed. Although there are various different types and the medical field has been researching it for decades, no cure has been found.
Doctor debunks myth you can get ‘cancer from bad luck’
In a podcast clip from Realfoodology, a series by nutritionist Courtney Swan, Doctor Lucas Tims spoke about alternative cancer treatments and the disease being found in younger populations.
Doctor Timsis a naturopathic oncologist specializing in integrative oncology. When speaking about the rise of diagnoses, why it is on the rise, and what is in our control to prevent it, Tims stated that cancer doesn’t appear from ‘bad luck’.
Tims explained that if you have poor lifestyle choices such as being a lifelong smoker, letting yourself go by not exercising, and eating junk food all the time, then it is possible that cancer could be as a result of these poor health choices.
The doctor explains that although a lot of things are out of our control, cancer is not a complete mystery and doctors do know things exist that can cause cancer – and they’re called carcinogens.
Carcinogens aresubstances, organisms, or agents that may increase your risk of cancer. Cleveland Clinic reports carcinogens may be physical, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun; chemical, like asbestos; or biological, such as infections caused by certain viruses. Simply having contact with a carcinogen does not mean you will develop cancer.
The top four carcinogens that Tims preaches about are heavy metals, molds, plastics, and pesticides. He explains that we get these carcinogens in the air we breathe, the water we drink, as well as our food, personal care products, furniture and clothing.
Ways to avoid carcinogens
Unfortunately, there is currently no way to avoid all carcinogens. However, you can avoid some known carcinogens by doing things like not using tobacco, avoiding beverages containing alcohol, getting vaccinated against viruses that are considered carcinogens, and protecting your skin from the sun and other sources of ultraviolet radiation.
According to Cancer Research UK, while there may be small amounts of pesticides on the surface of food we consume, it does not increase the risk of cancer.
Doctor Lucas Tims suggested that genes and genetic mutations do not cause cancer, despite mainstream messaging.
The oncologist reveals he thinks that is how we’ve gotten to this point in time where we can see a large jump in cancer diagnosis, due to the carcinogens.
He also suggests this is the reason behind cancer diagnosis in much younger people because a lot of the toxins are what we call bio accumulators, meaning that you can inherit some of these from your ancestors.
Doctor Lucas Tims specializes in integrative oncology, integrating evidence-based conventional treatments with complementary therapies.
