Dermatologist says people can get temporary ‘sensitive skin’ from their skincare routine

People suffering with ‘sensitive skin’ need to hear dermatologist Doctor Sam Ellis’ key advice because your skincare routine could be doing more harm than good.

Skincare advice online can range from tricks like baby carrots being a saving grace for beautiful skin, or studies showing how a Mediterranean diet can reduce acne, but a dermatologist has reminded people the importance of simply making sure your routine is right for you.

Dermatologist says your skincare might be causing sensitive skin

Doctor Sam Ellis is a Board-Certified Dermatologist who has shared some dermatology ‘truth bombs’ that could save your skin and keep it healthy.

First and foremost, Dr Ellis notes that if you think your skin is sensitive – it could just be having a normal reaction to putting acid on it, frm your beauty regime. (If you have always had sensitive skin, this is not aimed at you.)

If your skin feels reactive to everything you put on it, and it’s not always been that way, give yourself a break from ingredients like acids, retinoids and vitamin C’s.

Less is more when it comes to skincare! Dr Ellis suggests you should try simply using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and a good sun protection and see how your skin is after a month.

Skincare products could be causing sensitive skin and allergies

Secondly, you can in fact be allergic to a product you have used in your routine for years. People often think their ‘die-hard’ products can’t be causing skin issues, just because they’ve always used them. However, Ellis clarifies that it could be an allergy only developing now…

Oak Brook Allergists explains that skin allergies typically develop during childhood, butit is not uncommon to suddenly develop allergies during adulthood.

Additionally, you may think you are using the same product, but the manufacturer could have switched out an ingredient to reformulate the item.

The dermatologist expert recommends the best way to figure out if you are allergic to an ingredient or a product is to have formal allergy patch testing in a dermatology clinic.
