Couple lost at sea for two days sang songs until they were finally rescued

An Edmon couple that disappeared during scuba diving was reduced after floating in the sea for two days. A Jewish deli was all they could think about while trying to stay alive.

The Oklahoma couple drove straight to the restaurant in Houston after being released from the hospital, where they finally embraced the delicious food that kept them going when lost.

Couple lost at sea during scuba diving

Nathan and Kim Maker’s original plan was to head to Kenny & Ziggy’s Delicatessen Restaurant and Bakery after finishing the underwater activity with a group of divers. But fate had different plans for them.

There was an unusually strong current on Wednesday when the group was scuba diving in the Gulf of Mexico. The current overtook the couple and despite being experienced divers, the Makers ended up separating from the rest of the group as they couldn’t find the line that would guide them to the boat.

The couple remains afloat in the sea for 39 hours, about 20 miles from the shore. The New York Post reports, that the couple got stung by jellyfish and pried suckerfish from their legs, but they wouldn’t stop thinking about the restaurant they planned to visit.

As scary as the experience seems, the couple managed to survive by playing goofy games and singing songs to keep their spirits up while the rescue mission was underway. They forced themselves to swim to fight off hypothermia.

All we were thinking about was what we were going to drink when we got rescued, Mr. Maker told the publication.

Couple drives straight to restaurant after the rescue

Two days is a long time to be in the water and no matter how positively they tried to stay, the thought of search planes not spotting them at a distance prompted the couple to “accept that death was perhaps near.”

Luckily, they flashed SOS with a diving light when the rescue plane was making the last pass and they were rescued. The Makers were in a bad condition when found – the husband was almost in a diabetic coma and his wife’s mouth, and tongue were swollen from salt water.

However, their conditions didn’t stop them from fulfilling their promise as they went to Ziggy’s after being cleared to leave. They drove to the restaurant on Sunday and had exactly what they wanted – matzo ball soup, that triple-decker sandwich, and cheesecake with loads of pickle. It also happened to be their 12th wedding anniversary.

Ziggy Gruber, posted a picture of the hardcore fans of his restaurant on Instagram and didn’t allow them to pay for their food. “While they were floating in the water, with no protection all they could think about was how they wanted to eat at Kenny & Ziggy’s! They were released this morning and came straight to the deli to eat. What a miracle!” Mr. Ziggy’s Instagram post reads.
