Costco fans worried about the ‘size’ of rotisserie chicken as retailer rolls out new packaging
Costco fans don’t feel the same about their favorite seasoned rotisserie chicken anymore as the retailer has changed the packaging for the popular item, bidding goodbye to the signature plastic containers.
If you are among the people protesting the new environment-friendly option, you may as well make the most of it. Consider the TikTok hack we tried to debone a rotisserie chicken.

Costco’s rotisserie chicken is sold in a plastic bag
TikTok is full of videos depicting shoppers as Costco, unable to bring themselves to buy rotisserie chicken sold in plastic bags. The company rolled out its new packaging method sometime in March or April this year and outlets nationwide are now selling the popular item in plastic bags instead of containers.
Even though the switch is believed to positively impact the environment, by eliminating a large amount of plastic and minimizing transportation, fans are protesting the changes for self-serving reasons.
Fox Business learned from Costco that the new packaging would not only “save millions of pounds of plastic each year,” but the new bags take less space to transport, thus requiring fewer vehicles, eliminating “over 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.”
But fans are worried about losing out on containers, in addition to other issues with the new packaging.
Why fans aren’t happy with the new packaging
Not all shoppers are as unhappy with the new packaging for the $4.99 rotisserie chicken, but those complaining have listed the following reasons.
The man in one TikTok video with over 3 million views discussing the new packaging says it was “easier to find the grittiest chicken” when placed in the plastic containers, as the bags tend to become “foggy” when the meat is packed in, making it harder to see the actual size of its contents.
This is a common emotion echoed by most chicken lovers. One user commented: “But the chickens are smaller and since they are in the bag we cant really tell until we get home”
Some said the lid on plastic clamshells could be used to put bones and scraps while shredding the chicken, while others used the same container to save the rest of the meat for later.
A few have claimed that the chicken juice allegedly leaked through the new bags. The TikTok user claims it’s possible when the plastic bag moves around a lot while driving as opposed to the containers that would sit in one place.
But, there are many happy with Costco’s decision considering it’s supposedly safer for the planet, as long as the retailer continues to sell the chicken for a reasonable price, they don’t mind how it’s packed.
“Costco sells that chicken for $4.99 which is an amazing price to keep it at that price they have to throw it in that plastic bag,” said one. Another added: “If it doesnt affect the taste or price I’m fine with it”
“I prefer the bags. they didn’t leak on the way home,” read one comment, when one user said: “Is it still going to be 5 dollars?? Thats all I really care about.”
