‘Contra-dating’ could be a game-changer if traditional way to find love isn’t working
They say love can be found anywhere, yet, we always tend to swipe right on people with mutual interests. A dating expert now suggests ditching the traditional way for the new ‘Contra-dating’ could help you find the one.
The term coined by the dating site Plenty of Fish is appealing to singles tired of dating people similar to them and yet not finding “the one.” Perhaps, it’s time to look outside the box.

What is ‘Contra-dating’ and who should try it?
Contra-dating, which sounds like a wordplay for contradicting, is all about getting out of your comfort zone to let love enter your life.
If you’ve always pursued partners similar to you, in terms of appearance or shared interests, it’s time you look the other way. Sticking with the same expectations not only restricts your dating pool, but you may also be overlooking people who could make a great match.
The dating style was inspired by a survey of British singles – it found that 59% have engaged in contra-dating.

The resident expert at the dating website, Eva Gallagher, recommends the new method for singles who are looking to step outside their comfort zone and shake up their dating experience.
Seconding the above opinion, another dating coach, Myisha Battle, said: “We can really get boxed in by what we think we want and need, and we don’t allow room for people to surprise us.”
But, to be able to step outside the boundaries you’ve created for yourself, self-reflection is a must. Before getting back to the swiping game, you must have achieved clarity on what you’re looking for.
How to date against your type
Say you’ve always swiped right on men with beards or women who can dance, it’s time to stop doing that and go for people who aren’t your type.
Make each swipe on the dating app count by choosing profiles consciously that don’t display your typical interests or hobbies. It’s all about contradiction.
If you’re an avid traveler who enjoys solo trips, it’s worth swiping right on a homebody, who doesn’t mind their own company. However, it’s important to not overlook potential matches with core interests that may work for you as well.
Contra-dating works best when you pursue new hobbies or plans as it increases your chances of meeting a variety of people.
But, ditching the superficial preference for something new and meaningful can turn out to be the best surprise of your life. After all, one right connection is all it takes to find “the one”.
