Constipation can be a significant contributor to heart disease, shows study
Poor gut health is a key driver for several critical illnesses. A recent study found that people suffering from constipation are more susceptible to a deadly disease that kills hundreds and thousands of Americans every year.
We are what we eat and poor dietary choices can significantly impact our mental and physical health. Moreover, digestive health is so important that a mother’s gut microbiome can affect the brain development in babies.

Study finds constipation contributes to critical illnesses
Aside from causing bloating and making your bathroom visits difficult, chronic constipation is linked to critical illnesses such as heart disease and stroke.
A study published in Heart and Circulatory Physiology found that people who suffered from constipation were at higher risk of heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke. The researchers analyzed data from over 400,000 participants in the UK Biobank to make the observation.
One of the authors of the study, Francine Z. Marques, said: “Our study suggests that constipation, a common yet often overlooked health issue, maybe a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease.”
The research team found 23,814 cases of constipation out of the total sample who were twice as likely to experience major cardiac events.
It was further established that individuals with hypertension and suffering from constipation had a 34 percent increased risk of subsequent cardiac events compared to those with normal blood pressure.
However, the authors noted that the link between unhealthy stool and heart health needs further research, according to Medianet.
How a healthy poop looks
Healthy poop is a sign of a healthy gut, but how is it supposed to look? A naturopathic doctor urges people to pay attention to the appearance of their stool as it implies any underlying issue.
Dr. Janine Bowring says healthy poop is supposed to be dark and shaped like the letter S. She calls it an S-shaped dark sinker, which is equally good as poop that looks like a smooth log”.
Whereas, stool resembling tiny balls is a sign of severe constipation, which shouldn’t be taken lightly. It could be caused by a lack of fiber in your diet or because of other underlying conditions.
It’s highly recommended to get it checked with a doctor and refrain from trying the viral TikTok hack promising fast relief from constipation.
