Cillian Murphy’s advice for his 21-year-old self is something we should all do
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and we can use people’s past experiences and mistakes to guide our lives.
Oppenheimer actor Cillian Murphy was asked what he would tell his 21-year-old self, and his answer is something we should all follow.

Cillian Murphy’s advice for his 20-year-old self
Speaking in an interview with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the actor said his advice for his younger self is: “Instinct, instinct, instinct over intellect.”
“Always instinct. Just because you can rationalize it doesn’t mean it’s right. If you feel it, then it’s right. That’s what I really strongly believe,” he continued.
Murphy said you should always trust your gut in life situations rather than using your brain, which usually ends up in overthinking.
Your instinct knows whether something is right or wrong, so you should always go with your heart and what you truly feel you should do.
His advice can apply to so many different situations from relationships to your work life and general everyday decisions you need to make.
How to trust your gut instinct in life
Trusting your gut involves following the physical feelings your body gives you that you are doing the right or wrong thing, Better Up explains.
These feelings of intuition occur when the neurons in your gut communicate with the ones in your brain. The gut is the only organ to have its own nervous system, other than the brain.
Your body uses past experiences and memories to form a gut instinct, and it can manifest itself in many different ways including:
- ‘Butterflies’ or feeling sick
- Clammy or sweaty palms
- Tension or muscle tightness
- Tightness or a sense of calm in your chest
- A sudden sense of clarity
- Vivid dreams
- Increased heart rate
If you have a gut feeling, don’t ignore it!
