‘Capybara meme’ makes Glen Powell a late 2023 pop culture icon
Glen Powell is all hyped up about his new movie Anyone but You, but the internet cannot stop talking about his viral capybara meme that took social media by storm.
What is the viral capybara meme?
In December 2016, Glen attended the red carpet for Hidden Figures�at the SVA Theatre in New York, NY. There, a photographer managed to click his picture where the actor can be seen smiling with his mouth open. Later, a cropped version of the photograph was used on his Wikipedia page.
While the photo has been around for a while, it wasn’t until April 23 that it gained attention on social media. Twitter user @MissGioBaby1 shared the picture of Glen on the platform and captioned it as “He looks like a capybara who made a wish to become human.”
Soon, the tweet received a lot of attention and Glen became associated with the capybara meme.
Glen Powell reacts to the hilarious meme
Glen is aware of the viral photo and is proud of it. The actor recently sat down with Jimmy Fallon to promote his upcoming movie and addressed the meme.
He said: “So years ago I did a movie where basically I didn’t even get invited for the premiere. But I really wanted to go to the premiere as it was here in New York City. I got my own suit, got my own styling, I showed up, and I was really excited.”
“Maybe I was a little too excited and someone said that I looked like a capybara who made a wish to become a human and it kinda stuck. But this is why the internet is a great place. I really kinda own the capybara thing now. I am the capybara,” he continued.
What we know about his new movie
Apart from the capybara meme, Glen is also the talk of the town for his nude scene on Anyone but You. In the movie, there is a scene where the actor has to remove all his clothes because of a spider.
The camera captures Glen’s naked body from behind. Jimmy even joked that the actor might have done the scene to remove the attention from his viral meme.
