Starbucks Refreshers contain caffeine

Like all Refreshers, the new Starbucks drinks do contain some caffeine, because they are made with a Natural Green Coffee Flavor. This is an extract made from green unroasted coffee beans, so you get the caffeine kick without the coffee flavor.

When the chain first released Refreshers in 2012, they explained that the drinks give customers a “boost of natural energy with real fruit juice and green coffee extract” in a press release – and they still use the same recipe more than a decade on.

“The green coffee extract used in Starbucks Refreshers beverages is made from unroasted 100% arabica beans resulting in delicious, low calorie refreshment with a boost of natural energy from caffeine tasting nothing like traditional brewed coffee,” they said.

However, the caffeine content of Refreshers is a lot less than other traditional coffee drinks. Last month, Starbucks launched three Spicy Lemonade Refreshers which were flavored with a real Chili Powder Blend.

They are a low caffeine option

In comparison, a normal Grande Americano at Starbucks contains 225mg of caffeine, which is more than four times the new Refreshers.

A Grande Latte and Cappuccino both have 150mg of caffeine, a Flat White comes in at 195mg and a Grande Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino has 95mg.

So, Refreshers are a great low-caffeine option. You can also ask for all your favorite Starbucks coffees to be made with decaf instead.

MedlinePlus explains that for most adults, it is not harmful to consume up to 400mg of caffeine a day, but this varies by person.

Too much caffeine can result in side effects including restlessness and shakiness, insomnia, headaches, dizziness, fast heart rate, dehydration and anxiety.
