Burger King’s ‘design a Whopper’ marred by stomach-turning AI images

Ever since Burger King announced the ‘Design the Whopper’ contest, people have been able to put their creativity to the test, coming up unique toppings idea. However the AI images of the burgers aren’t exactly what we could call appetising.

Participants share AI images of the customized Whopper

The winning Whopper burger will be honored with a spot on the fast-food restaurant’s official menu for a brief period in addition to the $1 million prize for its creator.

An AI tool on the Burger King website helps to reimagine the final sandwich with toppings of your choice. But if you imagine the digitally created Whopper with the rare combination of toppings to resemble those on posters and commercials, you may be disappointed.

The posts featuring the AI burgers aren’t appetizing at all and rarely look anything like a real sandwich. And despite the clear instructions to not use peanuts or crustacean shellfish, people have added the restricted items as toppings, thus making the final sandwich look awful.

You can find clams and claws falling out of sandwiches in some images, while others show colorful sauces oozing out of them.

Some participants have placed gummy bears and chocolate bars between the buns and the AI tool has only done its job by exactly replicating the instructions.

For every Whooper burger created, you can only choose from two types of Patty – Impossible and 100% Flame-Grilled Beef patty. Look at the results shared by some on X/Twitter.

We aren’t sure of that!

This will make you think twice about your next bite.

This is unacceptable.
Hard to ignore.

How to enter Burger King’s $1 million contest

You must have a Burger King Royal Perks account to contest and must be a legal U.S. resident, 18 years or older to submit your entries, but anybody can create the Whoppers digitally for fun.

  1. Visit the Burger King website or the official app.
  2. Select Create Your Whopper Entry.
  3. Pick any patty you like.
  4. Tap on the bun on the top and type out the name of the topping by at least three or a maximum of eight.
  5. Select Create My Whopper and wait as the AI tool creates the final image.
  6. You can select the download icon on the right-hand side to save the image.

Burger King encourages contestants to use toppings that are safe for consumption and have a variety of ingredients. These must also be feasible and ways to prepare in the restaurants’ kitchen.

The contest is open through March 17, 2024, starting yesterday.
