Brits crying in European as grocery stores try major change to American bagging

British and European social media users are confused after Americans lost their minds over changes to grocery store bagging policies.

America and the UK might have diverged hundreds of years ago, but it seems such a short amount of time has sparked countless cultural differences. From what constitutes a chicken sandwich, to a typical American iced tea recipe, the culture divide is going strong. Now theres another to add to the list.

Americans may soon have to bag their own groceries

Over the years, America has been synonymous with the act of having your bags packed at the grocery store. Its a welcome reprieve from the humdrum of life, and something Europeans have never experienced.

But a new report last week suggests that time could be over, with CBC News saying that the pandemic and increased plastic bag prices are starting to force people to pack their own stuff.

The rise of reusable bags, sparked by the federal government’s plastic bag ban in late 2022, appears to have led to a general expectation in many stores that customers self-bag at check out, they penned in the caption. But some shoppers have posted complaints on social media, questioning why major grocery stores have reduced or eliminated cashier bagging services.

Naturally, some Americans are livid at the thought of packing their own food at the grocery store, with many taking to social media with lengthy rant posts.

They [grocery stores] just expect you to do it, one man told the news outlet. Its ridiculous, am I getting 5% off?

A former retail worker also told CBC that she feels its another thing people are taking away alongside increased prices and less full packaging.

Though studies do suggest that lines move faster when people pack their own groceries, store bosses told CBC that their staff is happy to help. You just have to ask.

Europeans are crying, and calling Americans far behind

Anytime American culture is called into question, like with the recent festival drama, British and other European users are quick to jump on board the drama.

This time, social media users called Americans out of touch and far behind the times as Europeans have been packing their own groceries for years.

One person quipped: The US is catching up with the rest of the world& wait till they hear about portable self-scanners.

I would go MAD if someone bagged my stuff. What if they dont do it right, another said, while a third added, As a European, I was confused when I visited Miami last year and they started packing my stuff. Keep your hands out of my bag! I will do it myself.”
