British people don’t sing the national anthem at every event and it ‘blows Americans’ minds’
From the food to the humor and the vocabulary, there are some huge differences between the UK and America.
Another big variation is the patriotism – one country takes it to a whole new level with the national anthem!

British people don’t sing the national anthem
British TikTok user Josh Cauldwell, who shares videos comparing the UK and US, explained that British people just don’t sing the national anthem like Americans do.
“So there is one thing Americans can’t comprehend that we do, or should I say don’t do, in the UK,” he said.
Josh then shared a comment from an American who asked confusedly: “Wait, you guys don’t sing your national anthem at every event?”
In the US, The Star-Spangled Banner is sung at the start of pretty much every professional sporting event, from American football to baseball. The players sing and the crowd all join in while placing their hands on their chests.
“They are patriotic through and through. Red, white and blue baby. Runs through the blood.” he continued. “In the UK, we do not do that.”
The only time the national anthem is sung in the UK is when the English national team is playing. For example, the Rugby World Cup or the UEFA European Football Championship. At every other event, the match will just begin.
“In general sporting events, you know, teams, locally, they will not be singing the national anthem at all,” the TikTok user added.
The US national anthem comes from a poem written by American lawyer Francis Scott Key in September 1914 called Defence of Fort M’Henry, USA Gov explains. He wrote it after witnessing the famous attack of Fort McHenry by the British Navy during the Battle of Baltimore.
It was first recognized for official use by theUnited States Navy in 1889 and then became the official National Anthem of the United States in March 1931. It was passed by the US Congress and signed into law by Herbert Hoover.
Americans think it’s really strange
In the comments, American people are sharing how strange it is that Brits don’t sing the national anthem very much.
One person wrote: “That is so weird to me. I literally get chills and have to hold back tears every single time.”
“Theyve tried to not do it at all couple of sporting events and the crowd was so mad that the crowd sang it themselves!” said another.
A third person added: “Guess I just assumed every country did that.”
It’s not just sporting events where the national anthem is played either. One person said they are a ride mechanic at a theme park and the anthem is played every morning!
“Some radio stations play the national anthem at noon EVERY DAY!” someone else said.
The Pledge of Allegiance is huge across the States too, with many having to recite it every morning at school.
America certainly wins when it comes to patriotism!
