Brit finally realises why Americans ‘aren’t well travelled’ and it makes so much sense

A British guy has gone viral on TikTok after realising why Americans stereotypically ‘aren’t very well travelled’.

He was responding to another video, in which an American woman claimed that Europeans “love to” say Americans haven’t seen much of the world.

Why Americans ‘aren’t well travelled’

“Brit in America here and I now know why Americans aren’t well travelled,” the TikTok user said before explaining that the reason is the sheer size of the country.

“I’ve spent many months in America, actively trying to get to as many states as possible in America, and I haven’t even scratched the surface,” he continued. “Americans don’t need to venture outside America because America is that big. Americans go on vacation in America.”

He then explained that back home in the UK, he can get to France, Germany and Amsterdam in just 45 minutes, and said Europeans “aren’t clued up” on how big the United States really is.

“Every single state is like its own country, literally like its own country,” the guy added. “You go to a different state and it’s like a whole different world. So, now I get why Americans ‘aren’t well travelled’. Americans are well travelled, just in their own country.”

The greatest distance between any two mainland points in United States is 3,523 miles by road, from Point Arena, California, to West Quoddy Head, Maine. That would take a staggering 53 hours to drive, more than two whole days.

In comparison, the UK’s two furthest points, Land’s End in southwest England to John o’ Groats in northeast Scotland are only 837 miles away from each other by road, which would only take 15 hours to drive.

Americans react in the comments

Americans are using different scenarios to try and explain how big the country actually is.

One person wrote: “You can drive 10 hours in Texas… and still be in Texas.”

“America has 50 states, and 31 of them are bigger than England,” another said.

A third person added: “7 hours to get to the state nearest to me.”

“I’ve lost friends because they’ve moved too far across the state,” someone else said.

Others think it’s crazy that it takes just 45 minutes to get to another country.

One person said 45 minutes doesn’t even get you to a gas station in the US sometimes. Another added that it takes then 60 minutes just to get to a grocery store.

“45 minutes to France! It took me 45 minutes to get to the mall and movies growing up,” someone else commented.

Lots of people are saying they don’t even own a passport, while others are explaining that they don’t leave the country because it’s too expensive.
