Bendable phones that can be worn as bracelets turn sci-fi dreams into reality

Samsung and Motorola have both unveiled new bendable phones that can be worn as bracelets at this years MWC.

Having a device on your wrist like Fallouts Pip-Boy or Leelas LoJack-a-mater from Futurama has been the dream of sci-fi fans for years and at an ongoing tech event, they have recently taken a step towards becoming a reality.

Motorola and Samsung unveil bendable phones

At the 2024 edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, tech companies Motorola and Samsung both unveiled rollable phones that can bend and be worn on the wrist as an extra-large smartwatch.

Samsung has named its bendable phone the Cling Band and it features a series of ridges on its rear that help it to grip onto your arm when it’s curled around your wrist.

Motorolas concept is slightly different from Samsungs and attaches to the wearers wrist using a magnetic strap, while its design also allows the phone to prop itself up as its own stand.

Both phones are a great way to free up pocket space, but given their size, they are somewhat bulky compared to devices such as smartwatches.

As things stand, however, both phones are just concept prototypes so there is no word yet on whether either will be developed further and put on sale.

Social media reacts

The bendable phones from Samsung and Motorola have proven to be huge talking points among tech fans, with many commenting on social media to voice their thoughts.

While the devices may be pulled from science fiction, modern-day audiences remain skeptical about their everyday practicality.

One Instagram user commented on a video, saying: That screen is gonna scratch in no time.

While a second said: I have anxiety every time she [the demonstrator] bends it.

Who in their right mind will wear that thing like a watch? asked a third.

Over on YouTube, another commenter wrote: Can’t help but think that wearing your phone on your wrist is going to cover the screen in scratches almost immediately. Neat concept, but it should probably stay just that to be honest.

The device should be thinner to be more bracelet-like, said another. Also, should have some type of lock to avoid dropping or stealing.

Another commented: Okay for gen 1 device but wont be adopted until it clasps fully around and is thinner. Like a futuristic slap bracelet.

And finally, this viewer asked: Why replace a smartwatch with something so bulky?
