Apple expert reveals the best time to buy an iPhone, new or pre-owned

Buying a new iPhone is always a stressful decision. You want to get the best model for the cheapest price, and there are far too many options.

To take some of the stress away, an Apple expert has revealed the best time of year to make the purchase and ensure you’re getting the best possible deal.

Best time to buy an iPhone

Tyler Morgan, who used to work at an Apple store, revealed that whether you’re buying a brand-new iPhone or a pre-owned one, the rules are always the same – purchase it right when the new model comes out!

New iPhones are always released in September 2024, so you should be looking to buy one during this month.

“Used or new, the best time is gonna be September. Right when the new ones come out, that’s when you get a new iPhone,” he said in a TikTok video.

You don’t have to get the newest one either. Even if you want to buy one of the older devices, like an iPhone 13 or 14, you should “take advantage” of this month because the new release always drives prices down.

If you’re looking to get a pre-owned iPhone, everyone starts selling their devices in September too as they just bought the new model, so more will suddenly be appearing on Amazon, eBay and other reselling sites.

Morgan explained that the worst time to buy a new iPhone is within a month or two of the new model coming out, so in July or August, as you may as well wait for September by that point.

Tip to get your money’s worth

Apple releases a new smartphone every year, but that doesn’t mean you should upgrade every time. The devices are designed to last far longer than 12 months, and there isn’t a huge difference between each of them.

To get the “best value” from each device, the Apple expert recommends waiting at least three years between each iPhone.

By that time, your device will have likely slowed down a lot, the battery life won’t be as good, the exterior might be a bit battered, and Apple will have introduced some features to the newest models that are worth investing in.

In a 2023 product life cycle assessment, Apple estimated that most customers use Mac devices for four years, and iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches for three years.

However, they noted that most Apple products do last longer and are often “passed along, resold, or returned to Apple” by the first owner for others to use.
