Apple debunks popular iPhone charging myths that supposedly harm battery life

Apple has released a guide debunking a series of iPhone charging myths including whether you should leave your phone plugged in overnight.

There has been a plethora of hints and tips spread on social media over the years on whether certain charging habits can damage the battery life of your iPhone, with some saying that you should charge your phone a certain way while others warning that the very same method could cause damage.

Apple reveals how charging affects your battery

In an effort to disprove certain online myths about charging your iPhone, Apple has released a helpful guide on how you can prolong your battery life and get it to last the whole day.

A common theory spread online is that you shouldnt charge your phone overnight and that you should only charge it when its completely out of power.

However, Apple states on its website that You can charge your iPhone every night even if the battery isnt fully depleted.

iPhone automatically stops charging when the battery is fully charged, so its safe to keep your iPhone connected to a charger overnight, Apple says. Charging resumes automatically if your battery level drops below 95 percent.

Although the guide does recommend that when possible, unplug your iPhone after it has fully charged.

By default, your iPhone uses Optimised Battery Charging, Apple says. To improve your batterys lifespan, Optimised Battery Charging reduces the time your iPhone spends fully charged. It fully charges your iPhone just in time for you to use it.

In essence, your phone can learn your usual charging routines so that, overnight, it can remain at a lower battery level before completing its charge before you wake up.

On top of that, the Apple website also addressed the effects of using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on battery life.

“Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are designed to draw minimal power from the battery when they arent connected to a network or accessory,” Apple says. “For the best experience on your iPhone, keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.”

How temperature affects your battery

Another big factor in prolonging your phones battery life is temperate as a battery warms up as it charges, which can reduce its lifespan.

To reduce the effect of heat and prevent overheating, iPhone gradually reduces the charging current as the battery approaches full charge, Apple reveals.

The companys website explains that iPhone is designed to perform well in a wide range of ambient temperatures, with 62 to 72F (16 to 22C) being the ideal comfort zone.

Avoid using or charging your device in ambient temperatures higher than 35C (95F), which can permanently reduce battery lifespan, warns the guide.

Conversely, cold temperatures can also impact battery performance.

When using your device in a very cold environment, you may notice a decrease in battery life. This condition is temporary; when the batterys temperature returns to its normal operating range, its performance will return to normal.

This writer has personal experience of an iPhone not enjoying cold temperatures, so Apples warnings shouldnt be ignored.
