American has ‘culture shock’ in Switzerland when she doesnt have to pay for a chair
An American has gone viral after sharing a crazy ‘culture shock’ she experienced while vacationing in Switzerland.
The woman was dumbfounded when she realized that she didn’t have to pay for a chair. Nothing is free in the US!

“This is how you know I am straight out of America,” the American called Sophie said on TikTok.
She went to a grocery store to pick up a sandwich and went to eat it in front of a beautiful lake, admiring the view.
As she was looking for somewhere to sit, she kept seeing people using some foldable deck chairs which they were clearly getting from somewhere nearby.
“I see that they are grabbing them from here,” she said while showing the chair box. “And I’m like where the hell is the place to rent these chairs?”
Sophie searched around for ages trying to find a stand to pay for the chairs and eventually asked a Swiss woman for help, who told her they were free to use.
“In America, you gotta pay for a seat,” she said in disbelief. “There is some culture shock. A country that actually wants you to enjoy [the view].”
Sadly, it’s not like that everywhere in Europe. Many places do charge to rent chairs, especially on beaches – but it shocked her nonetheless.
‘What’s the catch?’
In the comments, other Americans are astounded that they offered free chairs too, because you’d never find that in the US.
One person wrote: “Free?! Whats the catch?”
“As an American I still wouldnt believe them. WHAT IS FREE?” said another.
A third person added: “We literally have to pay for every little thing its bad out here.”
Others are saying if you did find free chairs in America, they would be vandalized, stolen or broken.
“You’d have to pay to park before you can pay to sit,” someone else added.
Another commented: “Wait so they actually put it back? Because we wouldnt let’s be honest.”
However, Americans are arguing that at least they do have one thing – free restrooms. In Europe, lots of places charge to use the bathroom.
