Amazing office space tech is the dream for anyone who works from home
One of the biggest issues facing people moving to big cities all over the world is a shrinking amount of apartment space and ever-increasing rent costs to match – but Brooklyn-based company Ori has devised an ingenious solution that could help city dwellers get more bang for their buck when it comes to space and offers one product that is perfect working from home, the Pocket Office.
Meet the Ori Pocket Office
As shown in the YouTube video below, the Ori Pocket Office is an extendable office space that doubles as a work area, storage unit and mounting point for a TV on its exterior wall.
With the push of a button, the cupboard-like unit extends to reveal a convenient office space within, with plenty of space to fit a desktop computer, a pull-out keyboard stand and lots of shelves for storage.
Worried about getting trapped in the Pocket Office if it were to start closing? Well, fear not as the unit features an obstacle detection system that prevents the walls from moving if a small amount of pressure is detected.
The Pocket Office is perfect for those living in apartments with limited space and also helps to create a separate area between work and personal life, something that is highly recommended to avoid burnout while working from home.
Ori: A new kid on the block
Based in Brooklyn, the company was founded in 2015 by Hasier Larrea and its name, Ori, is inspired by the Japanese paper-folding art form of Origami.
At present, Oris products are not available to purchase and install directly. Instead, the company rents out semi-furnished apartments that feature their unique foldable products.
Their range even beds and dining areas that fold away, to help city dwellers make the most of the limited space on offer.
Ori has expanded to more than 60 cities across the United States and Canada, ranging from Austin, Texas and Chicago, Illinois to Seattle, Washington and Los Angeles, California. Ori’s mission is to become a global business and has plans to expand to countries around the world.
As with any apartment, the cost of renting an Ori-furnished living space depends on where in the country youre looking. For example, Oris website currently has listings in Minneapolis priced from $950 per month while one listing in New York City would set you back $5275 per month.
Social media reacts
With over one million followers on Instagram, its safe to say that Ori and its extendable products have attracted plenty of attention.
Commenting on a video of the Pocket Office, one Instagram user said: Something I never knew I needed until now!!!
While a second added: This looks so cool.
Oh wow so ideal for small spaces, said a third.
However, not everyone was quite so keen: Anyone who can afford this setup could probably afford to live in a bigger space and therefore not need this setup.
Its sad that instead of making bigger homes, let’s figure out how to fit everything in 800 square feet and charge $3000 a month, added this commenter.
And finally, despite the fact that Ori products feature an obstacle detection system, a trend among commenters was to joke about the possibility of getting trapped by the closing walls as this commenter did: No no wait baaaabe! Im still working on something, what are you doing?? BAAAAAABBE AAARGGGHHG!!! (Squish).
