Airplane passengers astonished by secret meaning behind ‘ding’ sounds on flights

There is a set of sounds that every airplane passenger will have heard at some point during their travels – the various ding noises that play throughout the cabin at certain times during the flight, all of which have their own meaning.

Traveling by airplane is a process full of unique sights and sounds, many of which most passengers will tend to miss as theyre too busy trying to find their passports at the bottom of their bag, in their own world listening to music, or are arguing over who gets the coveted window seat but the humble dings are something impossible to miss and a video explaining the sounds in question has recently gone viral on TikTok.

TikTok video explains airplane ding sounds

If youve ever traveled by plane, youre sure to have heard a single soft-toned ding ring out through the cabin at various stages of the flight, or even on an occasion, a double chime of ding-dong.

A video posted by TikTok user Mitch Mohammed in which he explains the meanings behind the humble airplane ding sounds has recently gone viral, earning over 1.1 million at the time of writing.

He explained that the purpose of the sounds is to allow the cockpit and cabin crew to communicate with each other.

Take for example when you’re about to take off or land and you hear a single ding, he began. That’s usually an indication that the take-off has been approved and it sometimes even comes with a voice command from the cockpit.

About five minutes after take-off, you’ll hear two dings while in the air, Mitch added. That indicates that the plane is at 10,000 ft, meaning that wi-fi and laptops can be used and flight attendants can stand up, if it’s safe.

The TikToker also explained that a single ding in the middle of a flight can often be used to indicate that drinks service is about to start, meaning its time to get your card ready if youre planning on ordering anything.

Mitch also noted that the meaning of the ding sound does vary from airline to airline.

Social media reacts

Unsurprisingly, plenty of social media users commenting on the video were surprised to learn the meanings behind the airplane ding sounds while others also revealed a few extra meanings not discussed in the video.

One viewer commented: How did nobody know this?

While a second added: I always thought it was someone ringing for the flight attendant.

A third viewer, who claims to be a flight attendant, confirmed that: Every airline has their own system and it means different things.

This TikTok user joked: To me: single ding – we’re about to crash. Two dings – we’re about to crash. Any other dings – we’re about to crash.

While this viewer warned: If it’s 3 dings… reach for the parachute.

A message that was echoed by this commenter: When you hear three dings, it means there is a major problem. First time I ever heard that we entered major turbulence in a storm.
